Brazilian Institute Of Family Law
The Brazilian Institute of Family Law or IBDFAM (from ''Instituto Brasileiro de Direito de Família'', in Portuguese) is a non-profit civil association founded on October 25, 1997, in the city of Belo Horizonte, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, during the First Congress of Brazilian Family Law. The national headquarters of the Brazilian Institute of Family Law is located in Belo Horizonte. However, IBDFAM has representatives in all states of the union through its state and regional leaderships. Justice Maria Berenice Dias of the state of Rio Grande do Sul is the founder of the Brazilian Institute of Family Law and is currently its vice-president (in 2006). Dr. Dias was the very first female judge to take the bench in her home state. She also became a nominee to the Supreme Court of Justice of Brazil at the start of 2006. Maria Berenice Dias
Maria Berenice Dias (born 1948 in the city of Santiago, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) is a Brazilian judge and the first woman to take the bench in her home state of Rio Grande do Sul. Dias obtained her Post Graduate Degree and Master in Civil Proceeding from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. Dr. Dias also was the first woman to become a justice of the state highest Court of Appeals. She is the presiding justice over the Seventh Panel of Judges of the state highest Court of Appeals; the quorum of judges assembles in Porto Alegre, the state capital. Dr. Dias' own specialty is the area of family law. She was selected and she accepted the title of ambassador of the First World Outgames in 2006 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Same-sex marriage in Brazil has been legal since 16 May 2013 in accordance with a decision from the National Justice Council, ordering notaries of every state to perform same-sex marriages.
