Brazil's Federal Law 11340, also known as ''Lei Maria da Penha'' (Portuguese: ˆlej mÉˈɾi.É dÉ Ëˆpáº½É²É ''Maria da Penha Law'') targets gender based violence in Brazil, with the specific aim of reducing domestic violence in the country. Sanctioned on August 7, 2006 by former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and subsequently implemented on September 22, 2006, the law is an important contribution to an international movement of criminalizing violence against women. Women's police stations (also units or offices) – es, ComisarÃa de la Mujer, pt, Delegacia da mulher – are police stations specializing in crimes with female victims. They were first introduced in 1985 in Brazil and are numerous in Latin America. According to ''Latin American Perspectives'', the first women's police station was opened in Sao Paulo, Brazil and "In the first six months of operation, the DDM processed 2,083 reports." Officers at these stations are only allowed to respond to certain crimes, such as psychological violence, domestic violence, family violence, as well as specific types of threats and sexual violence. Domestic violence in Brazil involves any type of violence or abuse by intimate partners or family members against one another. The majority of domestic violence cases in Brazil are performed by the man against their female partners. In 2015, the government released a study that showed that every seven minutes a woman was a victim of domestic violence in Brazil, over 70% of the Brazilian female population will suffer some kind of violence throughout their lifetime and 1 in every 4 women reports being a victim of psychological or physical violence. In 2017, Brazil had an estimate of 606 cases of violence and 164 cases of rape per day, over 60 thousand cases throughout the year.
