Brazil Women's National Rugby Union Team
The Brazil women's national rugby union team are the national side of Brazil, representing them at rugby union. After several successful performances at Sevens rugby, they played their first 15-a-side fixture in May 2008 against Netherlands and lost 10–0. The team wasn't formed again until 2019, when Brazil visited Colombia for its first match against South American opposition. In 2020, Brazil and Colombia played again in Medellín, in a match that was the first one in a Women's Rugby World Cup qualifiers. Colombia defeated Brazil by 23-19. History The first women's rugby match known in Brazil took place in 1987, during São Paulo Athletic Club's traditional end-of-year sevens tournament. Rugby union, commonly known simply as rugby, is a close-contact team sport that originated at Rugby School in the first half of the 19th century. Women's Rugby World Cup
The Rugby World Cup is the women's rugby union world championship which is organised by World Rugby. The first Rugby World Cup for women was held in 1991, but it was not until the 1998 tournament that the tournament received official backing from the International Rugby Board (IRB, now World Rugby); by 2009, the IRB had retroactively recognized the 1991 and 1994 tournaments and their champions. The tournament is currently held every four years, and was most recently held in New Zealand in 2021, postponed to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Colombia national rugby union team ( es, selección de rugby de Colombia) is classified as a tier three nation by World Rugby. They have thus far not qualified for a Rugby World Cup, but have participated in qualifying tournaments. Colombia made their debut against Mexico in 1996. The Desterro Rugby Clube is a Brazilian rugby union (union) team from the city of Florianópolis, capital of the southern State of Santa Catarina. It has won the Brazilian Rugby Championship in three occasions: 1996, 2000 and 2005. History Desterro's history began in 1994, when a group of young men got together with the Portuguese Miguel Caçote, who had many years of experience in rugby. The first practices took place at “Joaquina” Beach, as the group didn't have a place to practice, and this beach was the only one in the island at the time with illumination. Rugby union in Brazil is a minor but growing sport, with rugby union increasing in popularity at universities across Brazil. Rugby union is played regularly in all of Brazil's 26 states and in the Federal District. The sport is not widely played in schools, but is common in universities, more specifically the South, South East as well as parts of Amazon and the North East.
