Brazil At The 1980 Summer Olympics
Brazil competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, USSR. 106 competitors, 91 men and 15 women, took part in 72 events in 14 sports. Brazilian athletes conquered gold medals again after 24 years, since the 1956 Summer Olympics. Brazil won two gold and two bronze medals in 1980. Both the two gold medals were obtained in sailing and they were the first gold medals in the history of the sport. Lars Sigurd Bjorkström and Alexandre Welter were Olympic champions in Tornado class. Marcos Soares and Eduardo Penido won the gold medal in the 470 class. Brazil won a medal in a relay event in swimming for the first time - the bronze in men's 4 × 200 metre freestyle relay. Brazilian Olympic Committee
The Brazilian Olympic Committee or BOC ( pt, Comitê Olímpico do Brasil – COB) is the highest authority in Brazilian sport and the governing body of Brazilian Olympic sport. It was officially founded on June 8, 1914, but World War I caused its official activities to begin only in 1935. It was founded at the headquarters of the Brazilian Federation of Rowing Societies (''Federação Brasileira das Sociedades de Remo'') as an initiative from the Metropolitan League of Athletic Sports (''Liga Metropolitana de Esportes Atléticos''). The BOC has multiple sources of income, but its principal means of funding is its 2% share of all the profits from the Brazilian National Lottery and other games of chance. Jaak Uudmäe
Jaak Uudmäe (born 3 September 1954) is an Estonian former triple jumper and long jumper who competed for the Soviet Union. He was the gold medalist at the Athletics at the 1980 Summer Olympics – Men's triple jump, 1980 Summer Olympics. He set a personal best of in his Olympic victory – a mark which remains the List of Estonian records in athletics, Estonian record. In 1979 and 1980, Uudmäe was acknowledged as Estonian Athlete of the Year. In 1980, Uudmäe's coach, Jaan Jürgenson, was nominated as the USSR Coach of the Year , and Jaak himself as the USSR Master Sportsman of the Year. Swimming At The 1980 Summer Olympics
Swimming as usual was one of the three aquatics disciplines at the 1980 Summer Olympics—the other two being Water Polo and Diving. It was held in the ''Swimming Pool'' of the ''Olimpiysky Sports Complex'' between July 20 and July 27. There was a total of 333 participants from 41 countries competing. Because the number of participants was reduced by the boycott, FINA broke format by doing away with the semifinals. Instead, the top 8 finishers from the heats qualified directly for the final, or final A as it was called. In events up to 400m, those that finished 9th to 16th in the heats would swim in Final B for the 9th place after the swimmers from Final A swam. Marcus Laborne Mattioli (born 18 October 1960 in Belo Horizonte) is a former international freestyle and butterfly swimmer from Brazil, who participated in the 1980 Summer Olympics for his native country. There he won the bronze medal in the men's 4×200-metre freestyle relay event at the 1980 Summer Olympics, alongside Jorge Fernandes, Cyro Delgado, and Djan Madruga. Participated at the 1978 World Aquatics Championships in West Berlin, where he finished 34th in the 100-metre freestyle, and 29th in the 200-metre freestyle. Djan Madruga
Djan Garrido Madruga (born 7 December 1958 in Rio de Janeiro) is a former international freestyle swimmer and former South American record-holder from Brazil. His younger brother Roger Madruga, was also a professional swimmer. Early life At 6 years of age, Djan Madruga usually played on Copacabana Beach with a friend. As a result of him nearly drowning, his father Dirceu Madruga enrolled him in the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) swimming school at Urca. He wanted his son to be able to play in the water safely, but soon Djan Madruga's instructor realized that the boy had a gift for swimming and recommended him for the Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas team. Cyro Marques Delgado (born 11 May 1961 in União da Vitória) is a Brazilian former freestyle swimmer. He was at the 1979 Pan American Games, in San Juan. He won silver in the 4×200-metre freestyle, and bronze in the 4×100-metre freestyle. He also finished 4th in the 4×100-metre medley. He broke the South American record in all three events.
