The Scottish Borders ( sco, the Mairches, 'the Marches'; gd, Crìochan na h-Alba) is one of 32 council areas of Scotland. It borders the City of Edinburgh, Dumfries and Galloway, East Lothian, Midlothian, South Lanarkshire, West Lothian and, to the south-west, south and east, the English counties of Cumbria and Northumberland. The administrative centre of the area is Newtown St Boswells. The term Scottish Borders, or normally just "the Borders", is also used to designate the areas of southern Scotland and northern England that bound the Anglo-Scottish border. Selkirk, Scottish Borders
Selkirk is a town and historic royal burgh in the Scottish Borders council district of southeastern Scotland. It lies on the Ettrick Water, a tributary of the River Tweed. The people of the town are known as Souters, which means cobblers (shoe makers and menders). At the time of the 2011 census, Selkirk's population was 5,784. History Selkirk was formerly the county town of Selkirkshire. Selkirk is one of the oldest Royal Burghs in Scotland and is the site of the earliest settlements in what is now the Scottish Borders. The town's name means "church by the hall" from the Old English ''sele'' ("hall" or "manor") and ''cirice'' ("church"). Yarrow Water
''Achillea millefolium'', commonly known as yarrow () or common yarrow, is a flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. Other common names include old man's pepper, devil's nettle, sanguinary, milfoil, soldier's woundwort, and thousand seal. The plant is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in Asia, Europe, and North America. It has been introduced as a feed for livestock in New Zealand and Australia. Bowhill House
Bowhill House is a historic house near Bowhill at Selkirk in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland. It is a member of the Historic Houses Association, and is one of the homes of the Duke of Buccleuch. The house is protected as a Category A listed building, and the grounds are listed on the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland. History Bowhill was built in 1708 by John, Lord Bowhill. His brother William Murray had bought the land earlier in 1690. In 1747, Francis Scott, 2nd Duke of Buccleuch, bought Bowhill for his son Lord Charles Scott who wanted to stand for Parliament in Roxburgh or Selkirk. In 1767, Henry, the third Duke, started to plant forests in the grounds, and in 1800, the 4th Duke Charles started to revamp what was an occasional summer house and turned it into a villa with gallery hall. Ettrickbridge
Ettrickbridge ( gd, Drochaid Eadaraig) is a village situated in the Scottish Borders region of Scotland, from the nearby town of Selkirk. It sits on the B7009 road, which follows the Ettrick Water south-west from Selkirk, along the Ettrick Valley as far as Tushielaw (OS grid reference NT305184). There have been settlements in the area for over a century, but in recent years the population has increased steadily, with new houses being built every year. Known as Kirkhope until the late 1700s, the erection of the bridge spanning the gap between cliffs either side of the river at the entrance to the village brought about the name 'Ettrickbridge'. Lord Henry Francis Montagu-Douglas Scott (15 January 1868 – 19 April 1945) was a Scottish first-class cricketer and British Army officer. The fourth son of William Montagu Douglas Scott, 6th Duke of Buccleuch and his wife, Louisa Montagu Douglas Scott, he was born in January 1868 at Bowhill, Selkirkshire. He was educated at Eton College, before going up to Christ Church, Oxford. Scott made a single appearance in first-class cricket for H. Philipson's XI against Oxford University at Oxford in 1891. Batting twice in the match, he ended the H. Philipson's XI first-innings unbeaten on 23, while in their second-innings he was dismissed for 2 runs by George Berkeley. After graduating from Oxford, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant into the part-time 3rd (Edinburgh Light Infantry Militia) Battalion, Royal Scots, a regiment that had been raised by the 3rd Duke of Buccleuch and also commanded by the 5th Duke.
