Bose Institute
Bose Institute (Basu Bigyan Mandir) is a public research institute of India and also one of its oldest. The Institute was established in 1917 by Acharya Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose, the father of modern scientific research in the Indian subcontinent. Bose was its Director for the first twenty years till his demise. Debendra Mohan Bose, who succeeded Nobel Laureate Sir CV Raman as Palit Professor of Physics at the University of Calcutta, was the Director of Bose Institute for the next thirty years. The Institute pioneered the concept of interdisciplinary research in Asia and India in sync with global trends. Sourindra Mohan Sircar
Sourindra Mohan Sircar (1908-1978) was one of the greatest botanists of India, specializing in plant physiology and anatomy. Birth and early life Sourindra Mohan Sircar was born in a Bengali Mahishya family of Nadia on March 1, 1908. His father was Gourkrishna Sircar and mother Kusumkamini Debi. Sourindra was the youngest of seven siblings. He studied in Krishnagar CMS School and Alamdanga High School. Then He obtained a bachelor of science in Botany from Presidency College and a masters in Botany from Calcutta University. He moved to UK to do his doctoral study. Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya
Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya (1 August 1895 – 8 April 1981) was an Indian entomologist and naturalist who spent most of his career at Bose Institute, Kolkata. He had no formal college degree. In 1981, the University of Calcutta awarded him an honorary Doctor of Science degree months before he died. He was awarded the Ananda Puraskar for Bengali literature in 1968, and the highest award for Bengali literature, the Rabindra Puraskar, in 1975. He published his first research papers in 1932, on life events in the body of plants. Subsequently, he also published work on bioluminescence and other botany topics, but gradually his interests shifted to entomology. He became an expert photographer, and photographed many varieties of ants, spiders, small bats and tadpoles. Bibha Chowdhuri
Bibha Chowdhuri (3 July 1913 – 2 June 1991) was an Indian physicist. She worked on particle physics and cosmic rays. The IAU has re-christened the star HD 86081 as Bibha (a yellow-white dwarf star in the constellation Sextans south of the celestial equator) after her. Early life and education Chowdhuri was born in Kolkata. Her father, Banku Behari Chowdhuri, was a doctor and her mother Urmila Devi was daughter of a Brahmo Samaj Missionary. She was the third eldest child, and had four sisters and a brother. Her aunt, Nirmala Devi, was married to Sir Nilratan Sircar. Her mother's family were adherents of the Brahmo Samaj movement. Her sister, Roma Chowdhuri, went on to become a teacher at Brahmo Balika Shikshalaya. Cholera toxin (also known as choleragen and sometimes abbreviated to CTX, Ctx or CT) is AB5 multimeric protein complex secreted by the bacterium ''Vibrio cholerae''. CTX is responsible for the massive, watery diarrhea characteristic of cholera infection. It is a member of the Heat-labile enterotoxin family. Sambhunath De ; (1 February 1915 – 15 April 1985) was an Indian medical scientist and researcher, who discovered the cholera toxin, the ''animal model of cholera'', and successfully demonstrated the method of transmission of cholera pathogen ''Vibrio cholerae''.
