Bombo (musical)
''Bombo'' is a Broadway musical with a book and lyrics by Harold R. Atteridge and music by Sigmund Romberg. Produced by Lee Shubert and J. J. Shubert, the Broadway production, staged by J. C. Huffman, opened on October 6, 1921 at the Jolson's 59th Street Theatre, where it ran for 219 performances. The cast included Al Jolson and Janet Adair. The musical has a thin story designed to showcase Jolson, who was at the height of his popularity. Songs were added by several composers during the run of the show so that, by the end of the run, there were more songs by composers other than Romberg than by him. The success of the musical on Broadway led to a national tour. Plot Gus (played by Jolson in blackface) is a man living in Genoa, Italy in 1921 who finds himself transported back in time to Spain in 1492. Bombo is a 2013 song performed by Norwegian singer Adelén. It was one of the finalists of Melodi Grand Prix 2013 in a bid to represent Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö Malmö (, ; da, Malmø ) is the largest city in the Swedish county (län) of Scania (Skåne). Bombo Criollo
The bombo criollo, or simply bombo, is a family of Latin American drums derived from the European bass drum (also called in Spanish ''bombo'') and native Latin American drum traditions. These drums are of smaller dimensions than the orchestral bass drum, and their frame can be made of wood or steel. They can be held vertically or diagonally on the body or a stand. The specific make of the instrument depends on the regional tradition. In Argentina, the bombo criollo is called bombo legüero and played in many folkloric styles. In Cuba, bombos are the largest drums played by the street comparsas in Santiago. In other countries, the term tambora is commonly used. The bombo should not be confused with the Puerto Rican bomba, a genre of music played with hand drums called ''barriles de bomba'' (bomba barrels), which are unrelated to the European bass drums. Bombo Legüero
Bombo legüero is an Argentine drum traditionally made of a hollowed tree trunk and covered with cured skins of animals such as goats, cows (leather) or sheep; ''legüero'' signifies that you can supposedly hear it a league away. It derives from the old European military drums, and uses a similar arrangement of hoops and leather thongs and loops to tighten the drumheads, which are usually double. It is also called bombo legüero to differentiate it from similar large drums. The body is made of a hollow log, with the inside scraped and chiseled. The drumheads are made of the skins of animals such as cows, sheep, or guanacos. Because the fur is left on the hide, the bombo’s sound is deep and dark. The bombo is played while hanging to the side of the drummer, who drapes one arm over the drum, to play it from above, while also striking it from the front. Bombo, New South Wales
Bombo is a suburb of the Municipality of Kiama, in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. It is located north of Kiama. Etymology Bombo is derived from "Thumbon", the name of a renowned headman and warrior born in this district. Infrastructure Bombo is the gateway between Kiama and its northern suburbs, Kiama Downs and Minnamurra. The Princes Highway runs through Bombo. In November 2005 a new six lane road opened replacing the original two lane road. Bombo railway station opened in 1887 as the terminus of the Illawarra railway line. In 1893 the line was extended to Kiama. It is the closest railway station to the Pacific Ocean in New South Wales. In the 1950s the New South Wales Government Railways established a ballast quarry. Bombo is a town in Luweero District in the Central Region, Uganda, Central Region of Uganda. History Many officers and soldiers of the Uganda Army (1971–1980), Uganda Army (UA) settled in Bombo upon their retirement during the Second Republic of Uganda (1971–79). At the time, many inhabitants were Nubians (Uganda), Nubians, an ethnic group whose members were viewed as supporters of President Idi Amin. The town also hosted the barracks for the UA's Malire Regiment. As a result, Bombo was affected by the Uganda–Tanzania War. Same District
Same is one of the seven districts of the Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania. It is bordered to the north by the Mwanga District, to the northeast by Kenya, to the south and southeast by the Korogwe District and Lushoto District of Tanga Region, and to the west by Simanjiro District of Manyara Region. Aama Bombo
Aama Bombo or Buddhi Maya Lama is a shaman in the Nepalese Tamang tradition. Aama Bombo means "Mother Shaman." She is also a member of the International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers (IC13G). Biography Bombo was born in Melong and later moved to Kathmandu after she was married at age sixteen. After suffering convulsions at age 25, she believed that her dead father, who had taught her shamanism as a child, was trying to leave her body. She began to practice as a faith healer afterwards. She is one of the first female shamans among the Tamang people. She sees around 60 people a day at the Boudhanath Temple. Bombo Rivera
Jesus "Bombo" Rivera Torres (born August 2, 1952) is a former Major League Baseball outfielder. At the age of seven, his youth baseball manager started calling him "Bombo", meaning "fly ball," and the nickname stuck. Aside from baseball, Rivera also excelled in track and field. He ran the 100 meters and threw shot put at Ponce High School. He followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, who was known for his "bomba and plena" musical skills, and played percussion for Ponce’s local bomba plena bands. Playing career Minor leagues Rivera signed with the Montreal Expos in 1970 and during his first season in the Expos farm system, while playing for the Gulf Coast League Expos in Bradenton, Florida, Rivera and some of his teammates took a trip to see the major league club play.
