Quireboys
The Quireboys are an English rock band formed in 1984 in London, with strong ties to Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle. When the band formed they were originally known as The Queerboys and later as the London Quireboys in the United States and Canada, settling at last with their current name. History 1985–89: Formation Vocalist Spike (musician), Jonathan Gray (commonly referred to as just 'Spike') moved from Newcastle upon Tyne to London when he was 17 years old. By the mid-1980s, the two decided to form a rock and roll band, the name chosen for the group was originally 'The Choirboys' taken from the The Choirboys (film), 1977 movie of the same name, but they soon changed it to the Queerboys. A Bit Of What You Fancy
''A Bit of What You Fancy'' is the debut studio album by the English rock band the Quireboys. It was released by EMI on 29 January 1990, and produced by George Tutko and Jim Cregan. ''A Bit of What You Fancy'' remains the Quireboys' most commercially successful album. It peaked at no. 2 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified Gold for sales of over 100,000 units. The album was preceded by four charting singles, with " Hey You" becoming the most successful. The album features contributions from drummer Ian Wallace. Spike (musician)
Jonathan Gray (born 4 February 1966), known professionally as Spike, or Spike Gray, is an English singer-songwriter and founding member of the British rock band the Quireboys, for whom he performed as lead singer and released 12 studio albums. He is recognised for his raspy voice which led to comparisons with Rod Stewart. As a solo performer, Spike has collaborated with Tyla of The Dogs D'Amour, and released five solo studio albums. In March 2022, fellow Quireboys members announced that Spike had been fired from the band, leading to an ongoing dispute about ownership of the Quireboys name. Career Jonathan Gray was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and grew up in Northern England. At age 17, he moved down to London where, eventually, he would form the rock band the Quireboys with Guy Bailey in 1984. Bitter Sweet & Twisted
''Bitter Sweet & Twisted'' is rock band the Quireboys's second studio album, released in 1993. The album was released on EMI and went into the UK Albums Chart at #31. Three of the tracks from this album ("Tramps & Thieves", "Brother Louie" and "Last Time") were released as singles, the latter of which was only released in Japan. "Brother Louie" was the highest charting from this album, as it reached #32 on the UK Singles Chart. The album was produced mostly by Bob Rock, some of the tracks were produced by the Rolling Stones producer Chris Kimsey. After this album, the Quireboys would split up and didn't release another studio album until 2001. Ginger Wildheart
Ginger Wildheart (born David Leslie Walls; 17 December 1964 in South Shields, England), sometimes known simply as Ginger, is an English rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He began his professional career as a guitarist in The Quireboys, but is best known as the founder and leader of The Wildhearts. In addition, he has released numerous solo albums and has been involved in many other musical projects. Career Early career Ginger played in many bands including South Shields band The Cups and Beki Bondage's band The Bombshells. He was a member of the English band The Quireboys from 1987 until 1989. The Tokyo Dragons were a London-based hard rock band. They achieved success in the UK and worldwide after releasing two successful albums and touring with Nashville Pussy, The Quireboys, Status Quo (band), Status Quo, Do Me Bad Things and Winnebago Deal. History The band was formed by friends Steve Lomax (guitar/vocals), Mal Bruk (guitar/vocals) and Phil Martini (drums/vocals) with Ade Easily (bass). Jason Bonham
Jason John Bonham (born 15 July 1966) is an English drummer. He is the son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. Since his father's death in September 1980, he has performed with the surviving three members of Led Zeppelin on several occasions, including the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert at O2 arena in London in December 2007. Jim Cregan
James Cregan (born 9 March 1946) is an English rock guitarist and bassist, best known for his associations with Family, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel and Rod Stewart. Cregan is a former husband of the singer Linda Lewis and worked with her as a record producer. He has also worked with London Quireboys, Glass Tiger, Katie Melua and formed ''Farm Dogs'' with Bernie Taupin. Career Born in Yeovil, Somerset, to Irish parents, Cregan joined The Falcons, When aged fourteen, which was formed whilst he attended Poole Grammar School. Ian Wallace (drummer)
Ian Russell Wallace (29 September 1946 – 22 February 2007) was an English rock and jazz drummer, most visibly as a member of progressive rock band King Crimson, as a member of David Lindley's El Rayo-X and as Don Henley's drummer. Early years Wallace was born in Bury and educated at Bury Grammar School. He formed his first band, The Jaguars, at school, before going on to join The Warriors with Jon Anderson in his pre-Yes days. (Wallace later played with Yes once in November 1968 during Bill Bruford's hiatus from the band). From The Warriors, Wallace went on to join Big Sound. In the 1960s, Big Sound worked in Denmark, Norway and Sweden as a backing band of Danish rock musician Nalle. The Wildhearts
The Wildhearts are an English rock band, formed in 1989 in Newcastle upon Tyne. The band's sound is a mixture of hard rock and melodic pop music, often described in the music press as combining influences as diverse as the Beatles and 1980s-era Metallica. The Wildhearts achieved several top 20 singles and two top 10 albums in Britain, though they also faced difficulties with record companies and many internal problems often relating to drugs and depression. Much of the band's early career was affected by bitter feuds with their record company, East West. Marquee Club
The Marquee Club was a music venue first located at 165 Oxford Street in London, when it opened in 1958 with a range of jazz and skiffle acts. Its most famous period was from 1964 to 1988 at 90 Wardour Street in Soho, and it finally closed when at 105 Charing Cross Road in 1996, although the name has been revived unsuccessfully three times in the 21st century. It was a small and relatively cheap club, located in the heart of the music industry in London's West End, and used to launch the careers of generations of rock acts. It was a key venue for early performances by bands who were to achieve worldwide fame in the 1960s and remained a venue for young bands in the following decades. Dogs D'Amour
The Dogs D'Amour are an English bluesey hard rock band formed in London in 1983. Over the years the band has had various line-ups, the only constant being vocalist Tyla. Their music has been described as a mixture of the Rolling Stones, the Faces and glam punk. Their 1989 release, ''A Graveyard of Empty Bottles'', reached No. 16 on the UK Albums Chart while the single "Satellite Kid" reached No. 26 on the UK Singles Chart. In 1991, the band broke up onstage, before reforming briefly in the early 1990s for the release of their sixth studio album ''More Unchartered Heights of Disgrace''. After this, however, the most famous incarnation of the band ceased to exist.
