Boechout () is a Municipalities of Belgium, municipality of Belgium located in the Flemish Region, Flemish province of Antwerp (province), Antwerp. The municipality comprises the towns of Boechout proper and . In 2021, Boechout had a total population of 13,526. The total area is 20.66 km². Boechout also hosts the Sfinks Festival. History Boechout is first mentioned in 974 as Villa Buocholt and a possession of the Saint Bavo's Abbey in Ghent. It used to be part of the Duchy of Brabant. In 1357, Antwerp, Boechout, Hove, Belgium, Hove and several other villages were acquired by the Count of Flanders, but was returned to Brabant in 1406. The village was severely damaged by war several times in the 16th century and again during World War I. In 1977, the municipality was merged into Boechout. Jan Cockx
Jan Cockx (1891, Boechout – 26 August 1976) was a Belgian painter perhaps best known for landscapes, still life and harbor scenes. Working with exuberant colors and mostly large-scale canvases, Cockx often painted simple subjects in vibrant ways. He defined space with color and often flattened the perspective. Some of his paintings appear to be influenced by Post-Impressionist and Fauve artists including Matisse and Gauguin. The pure, strong colors and distortion of form evocative of Fauvism are seen in a number of Cockx's works. World War I interrupted his studies at the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts and set back his fledgling art career. His first show, in Paris, was not until 1920, but was quickly followed by exhibitions in Antwerp (1922), Geneva (1923) and at museums in Maastricht and Lyon. Sfinks Festival
The Sfinks festival is a Belgium, Belgian festival for world music at Boechout. The festival is held during the last weekend in July. History The festival was originally held (1975–1994) in a local school park. In 1982 the festival featured exotic music for the first time which changed its appearance forever. In 1992 and 1994, Friday and Thursday were added to the festival to accommodate the expanding program. In 1994, the venue was changed to a larger site, the 'Molenveld' in Boechout to accommodate the larger crowds. The festival currently receives about 40,000 visitors and over 40 bands each year. Since some years the festival has shrunk again to three days. Mortsel () is a city and municipality close to the city of Antwerp located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality only comprises the city of Mortsel proper. In 2021, Mortsel had a total population of 26,170 people. The total area is 7.78 km². Geography The city consists of the areas Mortsel-Dorp, Oude-God and Luithagen. Jan Frans Willems (11 March 1793 – 24 June 1846) was a Flemish writer and ''father'' of the Flemish movement. Willems was born in the Belgian city of Boechout, while that was under French occupation. He started his career in the office of a notary in Antwerp. He devoted his leisure to literature, and in 1810 he gained a prize for poetry with an ode in celebration of the peace of Tilsit. He hailed with enthusiasm the foundation of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, and the revival of Flemish literature; and he published a number of spirited and eloquent writings in support of the claims of the native tongue of the Netherlands.
