Bodmin Hospital
Bodmin Hospital is a community hospital in Bodmin, Cornwall, England. It is managed by the Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. History A new facility was procured under a Private Finance Initiative contract in 2000 to replace both St Lawrence's Hospital and the old East Cornwall Hospital. The new hospital was built at a cost of £10 million and was opened by Charles, Prince of Wales in 2002. Services The hospital has five psychiatric and dementia wards, plus two wards for physical health and well-being. Services include an X-ray department, a dental clinic and a psychiatry department. A new young person's mental health unit, the 14-bed Sowenna unit, was built in 2018. Bodmin () is a town and civil parish in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated south-west of Bodmin Moor. The extent of the civil parish corresponds fairly closely to that of the town so is mostly urban in character. It is bordered to the east by Cardinham parish, to the southeast by Lanhydrock parish, to the southwest and west by Lanivet parish, and to the north by Helland parish. Bodmin had a population of 14,736 as of the 2011 Census. It was formerly the county town of Cornwall until the Crown Courts moved to Truro which is also the administrative centre (before 1835 the county town was Launceston). St Lawrence's Hospital, Bodmin
St Lawrence's Hospital was a mental hospital in Bodmin, Cornwall, England, UK. Part of the hospital has been converted to residential accommodation and the remainder has been demolished. It is a Grade II* listed building. History Origins St Lawrence's Hospital was originally built as the Cornwall County Asylum in 1818 to the design of architect John Foulston in the form of a star-shaped building with a central block and radiating wings. It was designed to deal with the problem of housing the insane poor and inmate conditions were notoriously bad. The humorist, William Robert Hicks, became domestic superintendent in the 1840s. It was extended in 1844 by the construction of the three-storey "High Building", demolished in 1964, and again in 1849 by the construction of Williams House, which was converted into apartments in 2004. Roger Michell (studio Potter)
Roger Michell (1947 – 2018) was a British studio potter, artist, illustrator, poet and writer. Although foremost a potter, his deep insight, curiosity and his singular skills enabled him to work across a range of disciplines. He was a prolific reader, often reading several books a week. His mind was constantly working on future projects, he had a vivid and complex imagination which was evident in his work. He was most known for designing Walking Ware, a tea set on legs with over-sized Mary Jane shoes. During the nineteen seventies and eighties, thousands of these tea sets were sold, either hand made from Lustre Pottery studio or manufactured by Carltonware in Stoke-on-Trent.
