Birmingham Bulldogs (speedway)
Birmingham Bulldogs also known as the Hall Green Bulldogs are a defunct British motorcycle speedway team who operated between 1929 and 1938 and were based at Hall Green Stadium, York Road, Hall Green in Birmingham, England. History Under the name Hall Green they entered the inaugural Southern League but withdrew during the 1929 Speedway Southern League and had their record expunged. The following season as the Hall Green Bulldogs they competed in the 1930 Speedway Southern League finishing fifth. The Bulldogs (now known as the Birmingham Bulldogs) rejoined the league for the 1934 Speedway National League finishing seventh. The club returned to league action during the 1937 Provincial Speedway League finishing 6th and only raced one more year afterwards in the 1938 Speedway National League Division Two. Hall Green Stadium
Hall Green Stadium was a greyhound racing stadium located in the Birmingham suburb of Hall Green, which existed from 1927 until 2017. The track itself was a 412-metre long oval track with a sand covered surface. The capacity of the stadium was between 2,500 and 3,000. Facilities The stadium's main stand facilities included outside terracing along the main straight, fast food outlets, a bar on the first floor, and an indoor seated area with glass frontage overlooking the track on second floor. Also on the second floor was the a la carte restaurant. Executive suites that can hold between 18 and 100 people were located on the first bend of the track. Related facilities included a hotel situated on bends 3 and 4 which opened in 1990, some rooms of which offered views of the track and a purpose built snooker hall along the back straight with 21 full sized tables. Hall Green is an area in southeast Birmingham, England, synonymous with the B28 postcode. It is also a council constituency, managed by its own district committee. Historically it lay within the county of Worcestershire. Politics Hall Green is part of the parliamentary constituency of Birmingham, Hall Green, which also includes the wards of Moseley and Kings Heath, Sparkbrook and Springfield; the Member of Parliament for the constituency is Tahir Ali, of the Labour Party. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . 1934 Speedway National League
The 1934 National League Division One was the sixth season of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. It was also the first time that a second division/tier of racing was introduced following the creation of a reserves league. Summary Birmingham Bulldogs (formerly Hall Green) and Lea Bridge rejoined the league. Sheffield dropped out and most of their team relocated to Lea Bridge. Clapton Saints, who rode at Lea Bridge's stadium in the previous season relocated and raced as Harringay Tigers for the first time. Crystal Palace relocated to New Cross. Coventry and Nottingham also dropped out. Lea Bridge closed down in late July and were replaced by a new side at Walthamstow who took on their last 10 fixtures. 1937 Provincial Speedway League
The 1937 Provincial Speedway League was the second season of the Provincial League. Seven speedway teams started the season. From the previous season's finishers, Plymouth Panthers had dropped out but Leicester, Birmingham (Hall Green) and Norwich Stars joined up. Leicester withdrew mid-season and their record was expunged. Liverpool Merseysiders also withdrew mid-season but their entry was taken over by Belle Vue. Bristol Bulldogs were the champions and moved up to the National League for the following season. Due to the brevity of the season, teams also competed for the Provincial Trophy in a league format. Leicester had already folded before the competition started and as with the league, Belle Vue replaced Liverpool Merseysiders. Nottingham won the Provincial Trophy and completed a double by winning the Provincial League Coronation Cup. 1938 Speedway National League Division Two
The 1938 National League Division Two was the inaugural season of British speedway's National League Division Two albeit a continuation of the Provincial League from the previous season in all but name. The list of teams had several changes. Bristol Bulldogs had moved up to the National League and Hackney Wick Wolves had moved down to take their place. They also swapped licences and riders as well as divisions. Other new entrants were Lea Bridge Cubs, Newcastle, Sheffield and West Ham Hawks ( West Ham's reserve team). Belle Vue Merseysiders who had replaced Liverpool in the previous season were also absent. Nottingham withdrew just after the start of the league season and were replaced by Leeds Lions. Billy Dallison
William James Baden Dallison (20 June 1900 – 25 March 1946) was a motorcycle speedway rider who rode in the earliest days of the sport in Britain. Speedway career Dallison, born in Camberwell, rode in the pioneer years of British speedway beginning his British leagues career riding for White City, Manchester during the 1929 Speedway English Dirt Track League season. He helped the team set the pace and lead the league table, winning 18 of their 20 matches but following a dispute, Manchester withdrew from the league handing Leeds the title. He rode for Hall Green Bulldogs during the 1930 Speedway Southern League and would remain one of the sports leading riders until the outbreak of World War II. He later became captain of the Birmingham team. Dallison died suddenly at home, in Birmingham on 25 March 1946.
