Billbrook
Billbrook () is a quarter of Hamburg, Germany, in the borough of Hamburg-Mitte. It is located on the southeastern border of the borough adjacent to the borough of Bergedorf. Billbrook is located in a swamp area near the Elbe and Bille rivers, which is described by the name, meaning ''Brook'' (''Bruchwald'', carr) at the river Bille. 2,198 people lived in Billbrook in 2016. Billbrook borders the quarters of Horn, Billstedt, Billwerder, Moorfleet and Rothenburgsort. History On the end of the 19th century the area was raised with sand in order to facilitate the construction of buildings. The area was accessed planfully by a network of long, straight streets, which is uncharacteristic for Hamburg. Five wide channels (Tiefstack- and Billbrookkanal, Tidekanal, Industriekanal and Moorfleeter Kanal) are used for drainage and are also navigable by ships with shallow draft. Hamburg-Mitte
Hamburg-Mitte (Hamburg Central) is one of the seven boroughs of Hamburg, Germany, covering most of the city's urban center. The quarters of Hamburg-Altstadt and Neustadt cover much of the city's historic core. In 2020 the population was 301,231. History In 1937 several settlements (e.g. Finkenwerder), villages and rural areas were passed into Hamburg enforced by the Greater Hamburg Act. On 1 March 2008 due to a law of Hamburg, the quarter Wilhelmsburg was transferred from the borough Harburg. Moorfleet () is a quarter of Hamburg, Germany, in the borough of Bergedorf. It is located in the west of the borough. Geography Moorfleet is a part of the Marschlande and is located at the Dove Elbe river. The quarter is not highly populated and is mainly used for agriculture. However the western part of Moorfleet is a part of the industrial area of the Port of Hamburg. Billwerder () is a quarter of Hamburg, Germany, in the borough of Bergedorf. It is located on the northwestern border of the borough adjacent to the borough of Hamburg-Mitte. At the same time Billwerder means a greater area south of the river Bille. Name The name derives from ''Bilnawerthere'', meaning ''island in the Bille''. A Werder is an island between rivers or other bodies of water, in this case Bille and Elbe/ Dove Elbe rivers. Until 1949 Billwerder was also named ''Billwärder an der Elbe''.
