Big City Radio
Big City Radio (formerly Aston FM) is a British community radio station based in Aston, Birmingham. The station, owned and operated by Murfin Music International, broadcasts on 89.1FM in Aston and surrounding areas, on DAB and online via the station's website and mobile apps. The station launched on 1 November 2005 as Aston FM, before rebranding as ''Big City'' four years later. In November 2017 Big City Radio changed its mainstream output from classic contemporary music to 'Urban' and 'Specialised' programming. In September 2022, the station began to tease a relaunch of the former Birmingham ILR brand BRMB on its website and social media. On 17 August 2023, it was announced that the UK's media regulator, Ofcom, had given Big City Radio approval to rebrand as BRMB. Aston
Aston is an area of inner Birmingham, England. Located immediately to the north-east of Central Birmingham, Aston constitutes a ward within the metropolitan authority. It is approximately 1.5 miles from Birmingham City Centre. History Aston was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as "Estone", having a mill, a priest and therefore probably a church, woodland and ploughland. Murfin Music International
Murfin Music International and Murfin Media are companies run by Muff Murfin, and are based at The Old Smithy Studios in Kempsey, Worcestershire, England. Murfin owns several radio stations in the UK, and also hires time at its studios to produce jingles for radio. Murfin, with his then music partner, Colin Owen, were billed as the M and O Band, and reached No. 16 in the UK Singles Chart in March 1976 with "Let's Do the Latin Hustle". The track was a cover version of the original recorded in 1975 by Eddie Drennon and B.B.S. Unlimited. Biography Murfin was a director and founder shareholder of The Bear 102 in Stratford-upon-Avon. Stunting is a type of publicity stunt in radio broadcasting, where a station—abruptly and often without advance announcement—begins to air content that is seemingly uncharacteristic compared to what is normally played. Stunting is typically used to generate publicity and audience attention for upcoming changes to a station's programming, such as new branding, format, or as a soft launch for a newly-established station. Occasionally, a stunt may be purely intended as publicity or a protest, and not actually result in a major programming change. Free Radio Birmingham is an Independent Local Radio station based in Birmingham, England, owned and operated by Bauer as part of the Hits Radio network. It broadcasts to Birmingham and the West Midlands. As of September 2022, the station has a weekly audience of 165,000 listeners according to RAJAR. Les Ross
Les Ross MBE is a British disc jockey in the West Midlands. He was born as Leslie Meakin; 7 February 1949, in Birmingham. Early life and career Ross always wanted to become a DJ and, at the age of 11, wrote to the general manager of Radio Luxembourg. He attended King Edward VI Aston School in Aston, Birmingham and left with 10 O Levels. His first job after school was at IBM, but he left after one year. His next job was as a clerk at Witton Cemetery. At the age of 17, Ross won a DJ competition run by the Birmingham Evening Mail, beating Johnnie Walker, who came in second.
