Bertha Wegmann
Bertha Wegmann (1847–1926) was a Danish portrait painter of German ancestry. She was the first woman to hold a chair at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Life When Bertha Wegmann was five years old, her family moved to Copenhagen, where her father became a merchant. He was an art lover and spent much of his spare time painting. She showed an interest in drawing at an early age, but received no formal education until she was nineteen, when she began taking lessons from Frederik Ferdinand Helsted, Heinrich Buntzen and Frederik Christian Lund. Two years later, with the support of her parents, Wegmann moved to Munich and lived there until 1881. At first, she studied with the historical painter Wilhelm von Lindenschmit the Younger, later with the Genre art, genre painter Eduard Kurzbauer, but she was not satisfied with learning in a studio atmosphere and decided to study directly from nature. ''Bertha Wegmann Painting a Portrait'' is a 19th-century painting by Jeanna Bauck, from the late 1870s, showing Bertha Wegmann at work in their joint studio in Munich. It was acquired by the National Museum, in Stockholm, in 1930 from Ms. Toni Agnes Möller-Wegmann as a gift. The two artists also lived in the studio depicted in the painting. Georg Emil Hansen
Georg Emil Hansen (12 May 1833, Naestved – 21 December 1891, Frederiksberg) was one of Denmark's pioneering photographers in the second half of the 19th century. He had his own studio in Copenhagen and later became a successful court photographer. Early life A native of Naestved in southern Sealand, he learnt the art of daguerreotyping from his father C.C. Hansen who had begun to produce daguerreotypes in 1849. After studying photography in Germany, in 1854 he helped his father set up a studio near Kongens Nytorv in the centre of Copenhagen. The new equipment he had brought back from Germany was of considerable assistance. In 1856, he opened a studio of his own, first located at Bredgade 22 and later in Østergade. Tegne- og Kunstindustriskolen for Kvinder (literally Draftsmanship and Industrial Design School for Women but sometimes referred to as the Arts and Crafts School for Women) was a private Danish educational establishment in Copenhagen. From 1875, it aimed to provide better facilities for women to develop competence in visual arts and handicrafts at a time when they were unable to enter the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. The school continued to operate until 1967 when it was merged with the Kunsthåndværkerskolen to form Skole for Brugskunst, later known as Danmarks Designskole. The school was from 1881 based at H. C. Andersens Boulevard 10. The building was designed in the Historicist style by Vilhelm Klein. It was listed on the Danish registry of protected buildings and places in 1993. Holckenhus is a late 19th-century, residential perimeter block located between Dantes Plads (Nos. 2–6), H. C. Andersens Boulevard (No. 33), Vester Voldgade (Nos. 86–90) and Stormgade (No. 35) in central Copenhagen, Denmark. The lofts of the four corner pavilions contained studio space and dwellings for artists. Artists who have lived and worked in the building include Peder Severin Krøyer, Emil Nolde and Bertha Wegmann. Thorvaldsen Medal
The Thorvaldsen Medal (Danish: Thorvaldsens Medalje, Thorvaldsen Medaillen) is awarded annually with few exceptions to a varying number of recipients by the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and is its highest distinction within the visual arts. It is named after the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. The medal was founded in 1837 as the Exhibition Medal and awarded for talented works in the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in the Charlottenborg Palace.
