Bert Boom
Albertus "Bert" Boom (born 6 May 1938) is a retired cyclist from the Netherlands. He won the UCI Motor-paced World Championships in 1969 and finished in third place in 1971. He competed until 1980 but with less success. After retiring he worked as a technician with professional cycling teams and ran a bicycle shop ''Bert Boom Race''. Around 1987 he became a promoting agent with Gazelle and Shimano. Later he worked as technical assistant for disabled basketball teams (wheelchairs) and cyclists and in this capacity was involved in international competitions and the 1996 Summer Olympics. Markelo
Markelo (; nds-nl, Maarkel) is a village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality of Hof van Twente, about west of Hengelo and south-west of Almelo. Markelo was a separate municipality between 1818 and 2001, when it became a part of Hof van Twente. Overview Markelo developed on the east flank of the . It was first mentioned in 1188 as Marclo, and means either "forest near communal ground" or "forest near border". The Dutch Reformed Church has a 15th century tower, but the building dates from 1840. In 1818, it became an independent municipality. In 1840, it was home to 793 people. In 1836, the gristmill ''De Hoop'' was built near Markelo. It has been restored in 1991. Motor-paced racing and motor-paced cycling refer to cycling behind a pacer in a car or more usually on a motorcycle. The cyclist (or stayer in this case) follows as close as they can to benefit from the slipstream of their pacer. The first paced races were behind other cyclists, sometimes as many as five riders on the same tandem. Bordeaux-Paris and record attempts have been ridden behind cars. Royal Dutch Gazelle is the largest and most famous bicycle manufacturer in the Netherlands. Gazelle employs 550 workers at its factory in Dieren, Netherlands, producing 300,000 bicycles a year.
