Markelo
Markelo (; nds-nl, Maarkel) is a village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality of Hof van Twente, about west of Hengelo and south-west of Almelo. Markelo was a separate municipality between 1818 and 2001, when it became a part of Hof van Twente. Overview Markelo developed on the east flank of the . It was first mentioned in 1188 as Marclo, and means either "forest near communal ground" or "forest near border". The Dutch Reformed Church has a 15th century tower, but the building dates from 1840. In 1818, it became an independent municipality. In 1840, it was home to 793 people. In 1836, the gristmill ''De Hoop'' was built near Markelo. It has been restored in 1991. Markelo used to be an agricultural village, however the eastern side of the village has become a residential zone. In 2001, it became part of Hof van Twente. Hof Van Twente
Hof van Twente () is a municipality in the eastern Netherlands, province Overijssel. The municipality was established 1 January 2001 as the result of the merger of the municipalities of Diepenheim, Goor, Markelo, Ambt Delden, and Stad Delden. Population centres The larger places are printed in bold types. History Goor (Dutch for: low, swampy land) achieved city rights in 1263. An important city, however, it never became. The "Drost" ( a kind of mayor) of the Twente region, who ruled this area in behalf of the bishop of Utrecht, had in the late Middle Ages his residence in Goor. In its surroundings some castles were built, among them the house of the important Heeckeren family in 1412. Goor had a small harbour along the river Regge ( which flows to the Vecht near Ommen), but when the Twente canal was opened in 1936, a new industrial port was built there. Twente
Twente ( nl, Twente , Tweants dialect: ''Tweante'') is a region in the eastern Netherlands. It encompasses the most urbanised and easternmost part of the province of Overijssel. Twente is most likely named after the Tuihanti or Tvihanti, a Germanic tribe that settled in the area and was mentioned by the Roman historian Tacitus. The region's borders are defined by the Overijssel region of Salland in the northwest and west (the river Regge roughly defines the western border), the German County of Bentheim in the northeast and east (the river Dinkel roughly defines the eastern border) and the Gelderland region of the Achterhoek in the south. Gert-Jan Oplaat (born 22 November 1964, Markelo, Overijssel) is a Dutch former politician. Career After secondary education he became a member of an agricultural family business. In 1994 he protested against the national manure and ammonia policies. In 1989 he joined the VVD. Between 1994 and 1998 he was a municipal councillor in Markelo. He was elected in the 1998 general election. He was his party's spokesman for agriculture. In 2004 he presented a pamphlet arguing for a more right-conservative course, together with Geert Wilders. His place on the electoral list was too low to be elected in the 2006 general election. After leaving parliament he became a consultant, administrator in branche organisations and chairman of the regional chamber of commerce. Maria Van Beckum
Maria van Beckum (before 1510 – 13 November 1544) was a Dutch noblewoman and Anabaptist executed for heresy. Maria was born in Markelo as the daughter of Johan II van Beckum (d. 1526) and Johanna van Wrede (died before 1511). She was the sister of Johan III van Beckum. After their father's brother died, they moved to Nijenhuis in Diepenheim. When their mother died, their father remarried Beatrix van de Hoeve, who threw Maria out of the house for becoming a follower of David Joris. In 1542, the Anabaptists were declared heretics in the Netherlands, and some time after that Maria was taken in by her brother. Maria was arrested 31 May 1544 on the orders of Goesen van Raesveldt, the bailiff of Twente, who was a relative and was next in line as the heir of Nijenhuis because Jan and Ursula van Beckum were childless. Almelo
Almelo () is a municipality and a city in the eastern Netherlands. The main population centres in the town are Aadorp, Almelo, Mariaparochie, and Bornerbroek. Almelo has about 72,000 inhabitants in the middle of the rolling countryside of Twente, with the industrial centres of Enschede and Hengelo as close neighbours but also with tourist towns like Ootmarsum, Delden and Markelo only a bicycle ride away. Almelo received city rights in 1394. Within the city limits lies the castle of the Counts of Almelo. Located in the city centre is Huize Almelo, a castle that in its current form dates back to 1662 (This castle is not open to the public). Anton Johan Wijnand (Wijnand) Duijvendak (born 30 November 1957) is a Politics of the Netherlands, Dutch politician. Albertus "Bert" Boom (born 6 May 1938) is a retired cyclist from the Netherlands. He won the UCI Motor-paced World Championships in 1969 and finished in third place in 1971.
