Berdjoang
''Berdjoang'' (literally "struggle", also known under the title ''Hope of the South'') is a 1943 film from the Japanese-occupied Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). The film, produced by the Japanese studio ''Nippon Eigasha'', is credited as having been directed by Rd. Ariffien, although Ariffien may have actually served as an assistant. Starring Mohamad Mochtar, Sambas, Dhalia, Kartolo, and Chatir Harro, it follows several villagers and their different approaches to Japanese military rule. The propaganda film was meant to draw Indonesians to enter a Japanese-sponsored army and survives, in part, in the Netherlands. Plot In Legok, a Japanese spokesman gives a speech regarding the formation of military units for native Indonesians. Mohamad Mochtar
Mohamad Mochtar (1 July 1918 – 1 December 1981), usually credited as Moh Mochtar, was an Indonesian film actor active from 1939 until his death in 1981. Biography Mochtar was born in Cianjur, West Java, Dutch East Indies, on 1 July 1918. He dropped out of school in the first year of Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs (junior high school). Sometime afterwards he was signed by the theatre company Miss Riboet's Orion for their association football, football team; he had been a fan of the game since his youth. Mochtar was later asked to perform on stage. By the late 1930s he was skilled at the traditional martial art of ''silat''. In 1939 Mochtar met The Teng Chun, owner and director of Java Industrial Film (JIF), while at a barbershop. Kartolo
Raden Mas Kartolo (before 1918 – 18 January 1949) was an Indonesian actor and songwriter. Born in Yogyakarta to a noble family, he entered the theatre and married the actress Roekiah around 1933. The two, living in Batavia (now Jakarta) acted in numerous movies together, starting with the 1938 hit ''Terang Boelan''. However, Roekiah was always cast with other actors as her romantic interest. After Roekiah died in 1945, Kartolo brought the family to Yogyakarta and worked with Radio Republik Indonesia until his death. One of his sons, Rachmat Kartolo, went on to be an actor in the 1960s and 1970s. Early life and career Kartolo was born in Yogyakarta, Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), to a family of noble descent. Dhalia (Perfected Spelling: Dahlia; 10 February 1925 – 14 April 1991) was an Indonesian actress active for over fifty years. She was nominated for three Citra Awards at the Indonesian Film Festival, winning one. Biography Dhalia was born on 10 February 1925, at Medan, Dutch East Indies, to Karang Intan and Tengku Katam. She was the only child, her father was born in Medan and worked as a stagewriter, who named his theatrical troupe Dhalia Opera after her. While her mother, worked as a stage actress and dancer. When she was a child, her mother passed away at Tuban. Dhalia spends her formal education studied at a Muhammadiyah-run elementary school then at a Muhammadiyah-run junior high school. The Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival is a documentary film festival held biennially in Yamagata, Japan ( ). It was first held in October 1989, which makes it one of the longest running documentary film festivals in the world and the most distinguished such festival in Asia.
