Benjamin Muckenhoupt
Benjamin Muckenhoupt (December 22, 1933, Boston – April 13, 2020, Whippany, New Jersey) was an American mathematician, specializing in analysis. He is known for the introduction of Muckenhoupt weights. Biography After graduating in 1950 from Newton High School (renamed in 1974 Newton North High School), Benjamin Muckenhoupt matriculated at Harvard University. where he graduated in 1954 with an A.B. At Harvard, by his outstanding score on the 1954 William Lowell Putnam Competition, he became a Putnam Fellow. At the University of Chicago, he graduated in 1955 with an M.Sc. and in 1958 with a Ph.D. His Ph.D. thesis ''On certain singular integrals'' was supervised by Antoni Zygmund. In the department of the mathematics of Rutgers University, he was an associate professor from 1963 to 1970 and a full professor from 1970 to 1991, when he retired as professor emeritus. Whippany is a unincorporated community located within Hanover Township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. Whippany's name is derived from the Whippanong Native Americans, a tribe that once inhabited the area. Whippanong meant "place of the willows", named for the trees growing along the banks of the Whippany River. History Whippany's Whippany River is an important part of the Munsee, colonial, and industrial history of the town. The river is protected by the Whippany River Watershed Action Committee. Munsee Lenape Circa 1000, Whippany, along with most of northern New Jersey, was inhabited by the Munsee Lenape. Circa 1500, all of New Jersey was part of the Lenapehoking. Eileen Louise Poiani is an American mathematician. She was the first female mathematics instructor at Saint Peter's University in New Jersey, where she is a professor of mathematics, former vice president, and special assistant to the president of the university. She was the first female president of Pi Mu Epsilon. Education Poiani grew up as a fourth-generation resident of Nutley, New Jersey, where she graduated from Nutley High School. She was an undergraduate in the Douglass Residential College of Rutgers University, earning Phi Beta Kappa honors, and remained at Rutgers for graduate study in mathematics.
