Beneteau 1 Ton
The Beneteau 1 Ton, also called the Beneteau First 40 Evolution, is a French sailboat that was designed by Groupe Finot, Jean Berret and Jacques Fauroux as an International Offshore Rule One Ton class racer and first built in 1983. The design was developed into the Beneteau First Class 12 racer in 1985. Production The design was built by Beneteau in France at their custom boat yard, from 1983 until 1985, with 12 boats completed, but it is now out of production. Design The 1 Ton is a racing keelboat, that was built with the most advanced materials that were available at the time: a carbon fibre- Kevlar foam sandwich. It has a fractional sloop rig, with a keel-stepped mast with three sets of unswept spreaders. Group Finot is a French boat design company based in Jouy-en-Josas. Founded by Jean-Marie Finot, the company specializes in the design of fiberglass sailboats. The company also collaborates with designer Pascal Conq as ''Groupe Finot - Conq'', based in Vannes, France. History The company was founded by Finot in 1969 when he designed his first boat, the International Offshore Rule Quarter Ton class champion Ecume de Mer (''Sea Foam'') that was built by Chantier Malliard. One Ton Class
One Ton class was an offshore sailing class, which raced for the One Ton Cup, of the RORC 22 foot rule between 1965 and 1970, and then the International Offshore Rule between 1971 and 1994. The IOR rated length was 27.5' from 1971 to 1982, then in order to match the minimum class of the Admiral's Cup, the rated length for the One Ton class increased to 30.55' from 1983 onwards. As well as regional competitions, the class spawned national-level trophies such as the North American One Ton cup. Harold Cudmore
Harold Cudmore, (born April 21, 1944) is an Irish sailor. Born and raised in Cork, Harold Cudmore became an internationally famous yacht racing skipper and match racer. Cudmore had success in classes from the International 505, where he placed 2nd in the World and 4th in Europe, through classes like the Half-ton and One-Ton classes where he won the Worlds, through to the America's Cup and the Admiral's Cup. He represented Ireland at the 1972 Summer Olympics, where he competed in the two-man Flying Dutchman sailing event. He was the first non-American to win the Congressional Cup in the US, one of the longest-established and most prestigious match racing events. Admiral's Cup
The Admiral's Cup was an international yachting regatta. For many years it was known as the unofficial world championship of offshore racing. The Admiral's Cup regatta was started in 1957 and was normally a biennial event (occurring in odd-numbered years) which was competed for between national teams. However the event was not staged in 2001 and was last held in 2003. It was cancelled at short notice in 2005. The 2003 event did not follow the normal format and allowed entries from any yacht club affiliated to a national authority, thus allowing the possibility of several teams per country. Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) is a handicapping system used for yacht racing in North America. It allows dissimilar classes of sailboats to be raced against each other. The aim is to cancel out the inherent advantages and disadvantages of each class of boats, so that results reflect crew skill rather than equipment superiority. PHRF is used mainly for larger sailboats (i.e., 7 meters and above). For dinghy racing, the Portsmouth yardstick handicapping system is more likely to be used. The handicap number assigned to a class of yachts is based on the yacht's speed relative to a theoretical yacht with a rating of 0. A yacht's handicap, or rating, is the number of seconds per mile traveled that the yacht in question should be behind the theoretical yacht. Hull Speed
Hull speed or displacement speed is the speed at which the wavelength of a vessel's bow wave is equal to the waterline length of the vessel. As boat speed increases from rest, the wavelength of the bow wave increases, and usually its crest-to-trough dimension (height) increases as well. When hull speed is exceeded, a vessel in displacement mode will appear to be climbing up the back of its bow wave. From a technical perspective, at hull speed the bow and stern waves interfere constructively, creating relatively large waves, and thus a relatively large value of wave drag. Ship drag for a displacement hull increases smoothly with speed as hull speed is approached and exceeded, often with no noticeable inflection at hull speed. A berth is a bed or sleeping accommodation on vehicles. Space accommodations have contributed to certain common design elements of berths. Beds in boats or ships While beds on large ships are little different from those on shore, the lack of space on smaller yachts means that bunks must be fit in wherever possible. Tiller
A tiller or till is a lever used to steer a vehicle. The mechanism is primarily used in watercraft, where it is attached to an outboard motor, rudder post or stock to provide leverage in the form of torque for the helmsman to turn the rudder. A tiller may also be used in vehicles outside of water, and was seen in early automobiles. Reverse Transom
A transom is the vertical reinforcement which strengthens the stern of a boat. This flat termination of the stern is typically above the waterline. The term was used as far back as Middle English in the 1300s, having come from Latin ''transversus'' (transverse) via Old French ''traversain'' (set crosswise). The stern of a boat is typically vertical. It can be raked such that there is an overhang above the water, as at the bow. A reverse transom is angled from the waterline forwards. Transoms can be used to support a rudder, outboard motor, or as a swimming and access platform.
