Harold Cudmore
Harold Cudmore, (born April 21, 1944) is an Irish sailor. Born and raised in Cork, Harold Cudmore became an internationally famous yacht racing skipper and match racer. Cudmore had success in classes from the International 505, where he placed 2nd in the World and 4th in Europe, through classes like the Half-ton and One-Ton classes where he won the Worlds, through to the America's Cup and the Admiral's Cup. He represented Ireland at the 1972 Summer Olympics, where he competed in the two-man Flying Dutchman sailing event. He was the first non-American to win the Congressional Cup in the US, one of the longest-established and most prestigious match racing events. Cork (city)
Cork ( , from , meaning 'marsh') is the second largest city in Ireland and third largest city by population on the island of Ireland. It is located in the south-west of Ireland, in the province of Munster. Following an extension to the city's boundary in 2019, its population is over 222,000. The city centre is an island positioned between two channels of the River Lee which meet downstream at the eastern end of the city centre, where the quays and docks along the river lead outwards towards Lough Mahon and Cork Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Sailing At The 1972 Summer Olympics – Flying Dutchman
The Flying Dutchman was a sailing event on the Sailing at the 1972 Summer Olympics program in Kiel- Schilksee. Seven races were scheduled and completed. 60 sailors, on 29 boats, from 29 nation competed. Race schedule Due to the interruption of the Games on 6 September 1972, the race was postponed till 7 September. Then the race conditions were unsuitable. Heavy fog and poor wind conditions made it not possible to race until 8 September. Also the medal ceremony was also postponed until 8 September. Course area and course configuration For the Flying Dutchman course area B(ravo) was used. The location ''(54°30'30'’N, 10°13'00'’E)'' points to the center of the 2 nm radius circle. The distance between mark 1 and 3 was about 2nm. Joe English (20 March 19564 November 2014) was an Irish yachtsman, professional sailor and sailmaker. He competed at multiple world championship level sailing events, including the America's Cup, the Whitbread Round The World Race and Admiral's Cup race series. In 1989, English skippered Ireland's first entry to take part in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. Born into a seafaring family in Cobh, County Cork, English became an internationally successful yacht-racing captain and long distance offshore competitor. English was involved in the development of the sport of sailing in Ireland, from an amateur hobby into a full-time profession. In the 2014 ''Irish Examiner'' obituary, he was described as ''The People's Skipper''. Career English had early success in the laser (dinghy) class. Sailing/Yachting is an Olympic sport starting from the Games of the 1st Olympiad ( 1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece). With the exception of 1904 and the canceled 1916 Summer Olympics, sailing has always been included on the Olympic schedule. The Sailing program of 1972 consisted of a total of six sailing classes (disciplines). For each class seven races were scheduled from 29 August 1972 to 8 September 1972 of the coast of Kiel-Schilksee in the Bay of Kiel.
