Ben Hur is an unincorporated community in Lee County, Virginia, United States. It is located along U.S. Route 58 Alternate southwest of Pennington Gap and northeast of Jonesville. Lee County is the westernmost county in the U.S. Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 22,173. Its county seat is Jonesville. History The area of far western Virginia and eastern Kentucky supported large Archaic Native American populations. The first known Europeans to enter what is present-day Lee County were a party of Spanish explorers, Juan de Villalobos and Francisco de Silvera, sent by Hernando de Soto in 1540, in search of gold. Pennington Gap is the most populous town in Lee County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,781 at the 2010 census. The Lee Regional Medical Center was in Pennington Gap until it closed in October 2013, and the United States Penitentiary, Lee is nearby. The Pennington Gap post office was established in 1891. Jonesville, Virginia
Jonesville is a town in and the county seat of Lee County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,034 at the 2010 census. History Jonesville was a small but thriving center of local commerce in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but like most towns in the central Appalachian region, it fell into gradual economic decline as the coal boom ebbed in the latter half of the twentieth century. By the end of the century much of the commercial real estate in its downtown area was either unoccupied or underutilized. Most of Jonesville's remaining commercial activity is concentrated in the west end. Lee High School is a public high school located in Lee County, Virginia, United States, near the town of Jonesville. It is a part of the Lee County School District and is one of two high schools in the county. History Founded in 1989, Lee High School was formed by consolidating Jonesville High School, Dryden High School, Keokee High School, Flatwoods High School, and Pennington High School. Athletics The football team made the state playoffs in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Lee High dropped from Group AA to Group A status in the 2007-2008 year (granted due to "travel hardship"). Auburn Lorenzo Pridemore (June 27, 1837 – May 17, 1900) was a nineteenth-century Virginia lawyer who served in the Virginia Senate and in the United States House of Representatives representing Virginia's 9th congressional district. Early and family life Born in Scott County, Virginia on June 27, 1837 to mountain farmer Daniel Pridemore and his wife Mary Ann Ingram, Pridemore had an older brother Hiram Demothensese Pridemore (1833-1892) and a sister Sarah Eleanor Pridemore (1842-1859).
