Beimen Railway Station
Beimen () (literally "North gate") is a railway station on the Forestry Bureau Alishan Forest Railway line located in East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. History The station was opened on 1 October 1912. On 16 May 1998 the station caught in fire which resulted the 40% burning of station right side. The Chiayi Forest District Office then planned a budget to restore the station and restoration work with red cypress was completed on 7 November the same year. In August 1999, section of the railway between Fenqihu Station and Alishan Station was badly damaged by Typhoon Morakot. On 20 September 1999, it was damaged again by the 1999 Jiji earthquake. After restoration efforts, a successful trail run of the train between Beimen Station and Alishan Station was made on 16 September 2015. Chiayi Old Prison
Chiayi Old Prison () is a former prison located at 140 Wei Hsin Road, East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. It underwent restoration and reopened as the Chiayi Prison Museum () in 2011. It was designated as a historic monument of Taiwan in 2005. History Chiayi Prison commenced its operation in 1922 under the name of Tainan Prison Chiayi Branch. In 1994, the Chiayi Prison was relocated to Lucao Township in Chiayi County. Architecture A distinct feature of the Chiayi Old Prison is the radial layout of the prison blocks with a staff positioned hall in the center. In contrast to the design of panopticon prisons, individual cells cannot be seen by the staff in the central hall unless they enter individual prison blocks. Another other similar Pennsylvania-style prison building is the Abashiri Prison in Hokkaido, Japan. Renyitan Dam
The Renyitan Dam () is a dam in Fanlu Township, Chiayi County, Taiwan. History The dam was initially constructed in April 1980 on Renyi Lake and was opened in October 1987. Technical specifications The water intake for the reservoir inside the dam comes from Bazhang River. The reservoir has a full capacity of 29,110,000 m3 and an effective capacity of 27,310,000 m3. The reservoir maximum surface area is 2.32 km2 with a maximum depth of 105 m. Hinoki Village
The Hinoki Village or Cypress Forest Life Village () is a culture village in East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. History The village was originally the dormitories of the Chiayi Forest division of Forestry Bureau of the Taiwan Governor General Office during the Japanese rule of Taiwan. On 26 February 2009, the Executive Yuan approved the establishment of the center. Construction commenced shortly and was completed in 2013. The transfer of operation of the village was completed on 28 September 2013. The village started its operation in January 2014. Chiayi Park () is a park at East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. History The park was built in 1911 during the Japanese era. 1999 Jiji Earthquake
The Chi-Chi earthquake (later also known as the Jiji earthquake) (), also known as the great earthquake of September 21 (), was a 7.3 ML or 7.7 Mw earthquake which occurred in Jiji (Chi-Chi), Nantou County, Taiwan on Tuesday, 21 September 1999 at 01:47:12 local time. 2,415 people were killed, 11,305 injured, and billion worth of damage was done. It is the second-deadliest earthquake in Taiwan's recorded history, after the 1935 Shinchiku-Taichū earthquake. Rescue groups from around the world joined local relief workers and the Taiwanese military in digging out survivors, clearing rubble, restoring essential services and distributing food and other aid to the more than 100,000 people made homeless by the quake. Chiayi (, Taiwanese Hokkien, Taigi Pe̍h-ōe-jī, POJ: ''Ka-gī''; ), officially known as Chiayi City, is a Provincial city (Taiwan), city located in the plains of southwestern Taiwan. Formerly called ''Kagee'' during the late Qing dynasty and ''Kagi'' during the Taiwan under Japanese rule, Japanese era (), its historical name is ''Tirosen''. History Early history First inhabited by the Hoanya Taiwanese aborigines, aborigines, the region was named Tirosen (variants ''Tirocen'', ''Tiracen'').
