Chiayi Park () is a park at East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. History The park was built in 1911 during the Japanese era. It was once renamed to Zhongshan Park in 1949, but reverted to its current name in 1997. Architecture The park spans over an area of 26.8 hectares. The park features the Sun-Shooting Tower, Chiayi Confucian Temple and Kagi Shrine. Chiayi (, Taiwanese Hokkien, Taigi Pe̍h-ōe-jī, POJ: ''Ka-gī''; ), officially known as Chiayi City, is a Provincial city (Taiwan), city located in the plains of southwestern Taiwan. Formerly called ''Kagee'' during the late Qing dynasty and ''Kagi'' during the Taiwan under Japanese rule, Japanese era (), its historical name is ''Tirosen''. History Early history First inhabited by the Hoanya Taiwanese aborigines, aborigines, the region was named Tirosen (variants ''Tirocen'', ''Tiracen''). With the arrival of Han Chinese immigrants in southwestern Taiwan, the name evolved to become ''Tsulosan'' () in Hokkien. Eventually, Tsulosan was shortened to simply Tsulo. Taiwan Under Japanese Rule
The island of Taiwan, together with the Penghu Islands, became a dependency of Japan in 1895, when the Qing dynasty ceded Fujian-Taiwan Province in the Treaty of Shimonoseki after the Japanese victory in the First Sino-Japanese War. The short-lived Republic of Formosa resistance movement was suppressed by Japanese troops and quickly defeated in the Capitulation of Tainan, ending organized resistance to Japanese occupation and inaugurating five decades of Japanese rule over Taiwan. Its administrative capital was in Taihoku (Taipei) led by the Governor-General of Taiwan. Sun-Shooting Tower
The Sun-Shooting Tower () or Chiayi Tower is a tower built inside Chiayi Park, East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. Architecture The tower stands at a height of 62 meters. Its exterior designed was inspired by a giant sacred tree in Alishan. The brown aluminum pattern mimics the wood grain of the tree and the center is left with a empty space that mimics the crack in the center of that giant sacred tree. The interior bronze sculpture is inspired by the "Sun-Shooting" legend of Taiwanese indigenous peoples. This bronze-made sculpture is 24 meters tall and 3 meters wide. The tower features an observation deck, a café and a small rooftop garden. Chiayi Confucian Temple
The Chiayi Confucian Temple () is a Confucian temple in Chiayi Park, East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. History The temple was originally built in 1706. In 1815, the temple restoration stele was inscribed and erected. In 1907, an earthquake occurred in the city and the Confucian Tablet was moved to Wenchang Hall and later re-housed at Nanmen Shengshen Temple. In 1961, the Confucian Temple was rebuilt inside Chiayi Park and the Temple Restoration Stele was re-erected in the garden of the new temple. In 1964, the new Confucian Temple was completed and the Confucian Tablet was returned to Dacheng Hall. Kagi Shrine
was a Shinto shrine located in previously ''Soa-a-teng'' (), Kagi City, Tainan Prefecture, Japanese Taiwan (modern-day Chiayi Park, Chiayi City, Taiwan). The shrine was built on 28 October 1915 ( Taishō 4) facing south but later altered in 1942 ( Shōwa 17) to face west. The shrine was originally categorized as a prefectural shrine in 1917 ( Taishō 6) but elevated to rank of in 1944 ( Shōwa 19). Prince Yoshihisa, , Ōnamuchi no Mikoto, and Amaterasu were enshrined as deities. The '' honden'' (main hall) was turned into a martyrs' shrine by the Republic of China government after World War II but was destroyed in a fire on 24 April 1994. The main office and purification hall now serve as the Chiayi City Historical Relics Museum.
