Italy is considered to be part of the wine belt of Europe. Nevertheless, beer, particularly mass-produced pale lagers, are common in the country. It is traditionally considered to be an ideal accompaniment to pizza; since the 1970s, beer has spread from pizzerias and has become much more popular for drinking in other situations. In the seventh century BC in Sicily, the Phoenicians traded and consumed beer. In Piedmont, Pombia, Province of Novara, an archaeological investigation found tombs from the Golasecca culture, including a tomb from 560 BC containing traces of beer. Ancient Rome knew of beer and produced small amounts, but the systems of production were destroyed in various barbarian invasions. Birrificio Angelo Poretti is an Italian brewing company located in Varese. The brewery was founded in 1877 by Angelo Poretti in Induno Olona. In 1939, the company passed to the Bassetti family, who owned the Splügen brewery in Chiavenna. Birra Ichnusa, or simply Ichnusa, is the name of a popular Sardinian-made beer, which is brewed in Assemini, a town near the Sardinian capital Cagliari. It is named after the Latinized ancient name for Sardinia, ''Hyknusa''. Birra Ichnusa is a lager (4.7% ABV) with a hoppy taste. Raffo was an Italian lager produced from 1919 to 1987 in its homonymous brewery in Taranto. In 1961, the brand was transferred to Peroni which, in turn, belongs to the South African SABMiller.
