Beattie Gold Mine
The Beattie Gold Mine is an abandoned gold mine in Duparquet, Quebec, Canada that began operating in 1933 and led to the founding of the town it is located in. Due to accidents claiming in total 26 lives and pollution, the installations were permanently closed in 1956. The mining concession is still active and there is talks into converting it into an open pit mine and demolish the remnants of the Beattie mine. Discovery and prospection The credit for the discovery of the Beattie deposit belongs to Mr. John Beattie, who has been interested in the district since 1910. He found gold in small veins in basalts on Beattie island, near the outlet of Duparquet lake, and did a considerable amount of work there, but the showings did not seem to warrant large-scale development. Duparquet
Duparquet () is a ''ville'' in northwestern Quebec, Canada in the MRC d'Abitibi-Ouest. It covers and had a population of 716 as of the Canada 2021 Census. History In 1912, a rich gold vein was discovered near Lake Duparquet by a prospector named Beattie. He set up the Beattie Gold Mine company that began operation in 1933. That same year, the new community forming at the mine was incorporated as Ville de Duparquet, named after the geographic township in which it is located. The township was named in 1916 in honour of Jean-Annet Chabreuil Du Parquet, a grenadier captain of the La Sarre Regiment, that was part of General Montcalm's army. After producing 1 million ounces of gold and killing at least 27 miners, including 4 in a landslide on 9 July 1946, the mine closed in 1956. Open-pit mining, also known as open-cast or open-cut mining and in larger contexts mega-mining, is a surface mining technique of extracting rock or minerals from the earth from an open-air pit, sometimes known as a borrow. This form of mining differs from extractive methods that require tunnelling into the earth, such as long wall mining. Open-pit mines are used when deposits of commercially useful ore or rocks are found near the surface. It is applied to ore or rocks found at the surface because the overburden is relatively thin or the material of interest is structurally unsuitable for tunnelling (as would be the case for cinder, sand, and gravel). Feldspars are a group of rock-forming aluminium tectosilicate minerals, also containing other cations such as sodium, calcium, potassium, or barium.
