Beat The Boots!
''Beat the Boots!'' is a box set by Frank Zappa. Released in 1991 through Rhino Entertainment, the set contains legal reissues of eight bootleg recordings made between 1967 and 1982 and originally distributed illegally prior to this official release. A second box set of bootleg recordings, ''Beat the Boots! II'', was released through Rhino in June 1992. Contents ''Beat the Boots!'' was released so that Zappa could reclaim financial and legal ownership of the recordings. By reproducing the exact contents and artwork of bootleg albums without any alterations, Zappa could claim any further reproduction of the recordings as a counterfeit, which would make further unauthorized distribution of his music easier to prosecute. The box set was released in limited vinyl record and cassette tape runs, and the titles were also released as individual compact discs by Rhino Entertainment. ''Tis the Season to Be Jelly'' is a recording of a radio broadcast. ''The Ark'' had been produced from a sou ...

Box Set
A box set or (its original name) boxed set is a set of items (for example, a compilation of books, musical recordings, films or television programs) traditionally packaged in a box and offered for sale as a single unit. Music Artists and bands with an extremely long and successful career often have anthology or "essential" collections of their boxes of music released as box sets. These often include rare and never-before-released tracks. Some box sets collect previously released boxes of singles or albums by a music artist, and often collect the complete discography of an artist such as Pink Floyd's ''Oh, by the Way'' and ''Discovery'' sets. Sometimes bands release expanded versions of their most successful albums such as Pink Floyd's ''Immersion'' box set versions of their ''The Dark Side of the Moon'' (1973), ''Wish You Were Here'' (1975) and ''The Wall'' (1979) albums. Pink Floyd have also released ''The Early Years 1965–1972'' box set which features mostly unreleased mate ...

Brown Shoes Don't Make It
"Brown Shoes Don't Make It" is a song by The Mothers of Invention, written by band leader Frank Zappa. It is the 14th (12th on the original vinyl) and penultimate song on their second album '' Absolutely Free''. The song is one of his most widely renowned works, declared by the ''AllMusic'' as "Zappa's first real masterpiece". History The title was inspired by an event covered by ''Time'' magazine reporter Hugh Sidey in 1966. The reporter correctly guessed that something was amiss when the fastidiously dressed President Lyndon B. Johnson made the sartorial faux pas of wearing brown shoes with a gray suit. Johnson flew to Vietnam for a surprise public relations visit later that day. Live versions of this song are featured on the albums ''Tinsel Town Rebellion'' and '' Road Tapes, Venue 2''. Music and lyrics The song was written in April 1966 during a trip to Honolulu where The Mothers played for a week at a club called "Da Swamp". The lyrics are derived from Zappa's belief that ...

Camarillo Brillo
"Camarillo Brillo" is a song by Frank Zappa and The Mothers and was first included on his 1973 LP ''Over-Nite Sensation''. The song's lyrics include many colloquialisms and made-up words. The title itself is a pun; Zappa mispronounces Camarillo, the name of a city in California, to rhyme with brillo, "shining" or "brilliant" in Spanish. "Camarillo Brillo" is in the key of E major, though the key briefly changes to D major during the chorus. The arrangement includes liberal use of brass instruments and a wide range of percussion techniques. It ends with a short coda played on piano. There are two versions of this song, the first being in a slower tempo and the second being a much shorter up tempo version played later in Frank Zappa's career. The shorter version can be heard on '' You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol. 6''. The reason for changing the song's pace was discussed in an interview with Zappa in which he states that the song was "boring" so they sped it up in future per ...

Let's Make The Water Turn Black
"Let's Make the Water Turn Black" is a patter song which first appeared on the 1968 Mothers of Invention album ''We're Only in It for the Money'' and later on the 1995 compilation album ''Strictly Commercial''. An uptempo instrumental version is featured on the 1991 live album ''Make a Jazz Noise Here''. Background "Let's Make The Water Turn Black" tells the true story of brothers Ronald and Kenneth Williams (referred to as "Ronnie" and "Kenny" respectively), neighbors of the song's composer Frank Zappa in the early 1960s, when he was living in Ontario, California. It says that while their father, known as "Daddy Dinky" (Dalton Williams), was away at work "selling lamps and chairs to San Ber'dino squares" and while their mother (Signa), worked "feeding all the boys at Ed's Café" (on Holt Blvd. in Ontario, Ca.), the brothers occupied their after-school time with such activities as igniting each other's flatulence. In the original release, a reference to their mother "in her apro ...

Fillmore East
The Fillmore East was rock promoter Bill Graham's rock venue on Second Avenue near East 6th Street in the (at the time) Lower East Side neighborhood, now called the East Village neighborhood of the borough of Manhattan of New York City. It was open from March 8, 1968, to June 27, 1971, and featured some of the biggest acts in rock music at the time. The Fillmore East was a companion to Graham's Fillmore Auditorium, and its successor, the Fillmore West, in San Francisco, Graham's home base. Pre-Fillmore East The theatre at 105 Second Avenue that became the Fillmore East was originally built as a Yiddish theater in 1925–26 – designed by Harrison Wiseman in the Medieval Revival style – at a time when that section of Second Avenue was known as the "Yiddish Theater District" and the "Jewish Rialto" because of the numerous theatres that catered to a Yiddish-speaking audience. Called the Commodore Theater, and independently operated, it eventually was taken over by Loews ...
