Barclay Memorial Park
The Barclay Memorial Park () is a memorial park in Chongming Village, East District, Tainan, Taiwan. Name The park was named after Thomas Barclay, a British missionary to Taiwan in 1875–1935. History In 1993, the park area was actually designed to be Park No. 18 by Tainan City Government in which the city government should carry out the construction project within the same year. However, due to land ownership disputes between Tainan City and Tainan County, the land failed to be developed which caused the park to remain idle since then. After a decade without proper management, the park was flooded with wild plants and trashes, which eventually turned out to be a landfill. In 2001, the chief of Chongming Village had an idea of rejuvenate the park area and turn it into a beautiful park. East District, Tainan
East District () is a district home to 180,409 people located in Tainan, Taiwan. History East District was formed with the merging of Dongmen and Zhuwei and part of Kaishan and Zhaohe in 1945. The East District Office was originally established in Mituo Temple. In April 1946, Dapu, Gongming, Junwang, Kaishan and Wufei were added into the district, which made the district consisted of 26 villages. In July 1946, the district office moved to Junwang Temple. In March 1948, Dalin dan Zhusi were added into the district, which made the district consisted of 28 villages. Thomas Barclay (missionary)
Thomas Barclay (; 21 November 1849 – 5 October 1935) was a missionary of the Presbyterian Church of England to Formosa (now called Taiwan) from 1875 until his death. His ministry in southern Taiwan has been compared to the work done in northern Taiwan by George Leslie Mackay. He founded Tainan Theological College and Seminary in 1876. Early life Thomas Barclay was born on 21 November 1849 in Glasgow, the youngest brother of six (he also had one sister). His father was a devout merchant who sold soft goods and fabrics, and claimed French Huguenot ancestry for the family. The younger Barclay was an able student, and matriculated at Glasgow University a few weeks before his 15th birthday (his young age not being unusual in those days). Tainan County was a county in southern Taiwan between 1945 and 2010. The county seat was in Sinying City. History Tainan County was established on 7 January 1946 on the territory of Tainan Prefecture () shortly after the end of World War II. In the early years, Tainan County consists of most territory of Tainan Prefecture except the territory near cities of Tainan and Kagi (Chiayi).
