Bangladeshi Canadian
Bangladeshi Canadians (french: Canadiens Bangladais, bn, কানাডীয় বাংলাদেশী, Kanaḍīyô Bangladeshī) are Canadian citizens of Bangladeshi descent, first-generation Bangladeshi immigrants, or descendants of Bangladeshis who immigrated to Canada. The term may also refer to people who hold dual Bangladeshi and Canadian citizenship. Demographics While there are no recent official data, however according to the Statistics Canada (2020) there are 100,000 Bangladeshi origin Canadians. Some references show fewer of Bangladesh origin in Canada. The unofficial number of Bangladeshi Canadians as of 2016 is anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000. , more than 28,000 Bangladeshis lived in the city of Toronto, according to Statistics Canada. The Greater Toronto Area, commonly referred to as the GTA, includes the City of Toronto and the regional municipalities of Durham, Halton, Peel, and York. In total, the region contains 25 urban, suburban, and rural municipalities. The Greater Toronto Area begins in Burlington in Halton Region, and extends along Lake Ontario past downtown Toronto eastward to Clarington in Durham Region. Rafiqul Islam (activist)
Rafiqul Islam (16 July 1950 – 20 November 2013) was a Bangladeshi-born Canadian language activist. He played a major role in achieving recognition of February 21 as the International Mother Language Day, proclaimed by the General Conference of UNESCO in November 1999. He was awarded Independence Day Award posthumously by the Government of Bangladesh in 2016. Mia Abbas Uddin (1 January 1949 – 28 December 2017) Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician. He was elected a member of parliament from Bagerhat-4 in 1988. Early life Mia Abbas Uddin was born on 1 January 1949 in Bagerhat District. His father Manik Mia and mother Raushan Ara. She married Setara Abbas. They have 1 son and 3 daughters. Shamit Shome (born September 5, 1997) is a Canadian professional soccer player who plays as a midfielder for Cavalry FC. Early life Shome, a Bengali, was born in Edmonton to Bangladeshi parents. He played youth soccer with Edmonton Southwest United SC from 2003 until 2014. While playing for the Impact, Shome studied electrical engineering at Concordia University. Club career FC Edmonton Shome joined FC Edmonton's academy program in 2015. In the fall of that year he enrolled at the University of Alberta and had a standout year with the Alberta Golden Bears scoring six goals in twelve appearances. Mizan Rahman
Mizan Rahman (September 16, 1932 – January 5, 2015) was a Bangladeshi Canadian mathematician and writer. He specialized in fields of mathematics such as hypergeometric series and orthogonal polynomials. He also had interests encompassing literature, philosophy, scientific skepticism, freethinking and rationalism. He co-authored ''Basic Hypergeometric Series'' with George Gasper. This book is widely considered as the standard work of choice for that subject of study. He also published ten Bengali books. Amit Chakma (born 25 April 1959) is a university administrator who was appointed vice-chancellor of the University of Western Australia in July 2020. Doly Begum
Doly Begum ( bn, ডলি বেগম) is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the 2018 provincial election. She represents the riding of Scarborough Southwest as a member of the Ontario New Democratic Party. At 29, Doly Begum was the youngest New Democrat among the party's caucus and is the first Bangladeshi-Canadian to be elected to a legislative body in Canada.
