Baeomyces Rufus
''Baeomyces rufus'', commonly known as the brown beret lichen, is a fruticose lichen belonging to the cap lichen family, Baeomycetaceae. The species was first described by J.F Rebentisch in 1804. Like other lichens, it is a symbiosis between a fungus and an alga. Taxonomy William Hudson described this species as ''Lichen rufus'' in 1762. The similar-appearing lichen ''D. baeomyces'' was formerly identified as ''Baeomyces roseus''; it was not until 1997 that a study by Soili Stenroos and Paula DePriest used DNA sequencing to establish that the species now called ''Dibaeis baeomyces'' did not belong to the genus ''Baeomyces''. William Hudson (botanist)
William Hudson FRS (1730 in Kendal – 23 May 1793) was a British botanist and apothecary based in London. His main work was ''Flora Anglica'', published in 1762. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1761. Life and work Hudson was born between 1730 and 1732 at the White Lion Inn, Kendal, which was kept by his father. He was educated at Kendal grammar school, Hudson was subsequently apprenticed to an apothecary in London. He obtained the prize for botany given by the Apothecaries' Company which was a copy of Ray's ''Synopsis''. However, he also paid attention to mollusca and insects and in Pennant's '' British Zoology'' he is mentioned as the discoverer of '' Trochus terrestris''. Baeomycetales
The Baeomycetales are an order of mostly lichen-forming fungi in the subclass Ostropomycetidae, in the class Lecanoromycetes. It contains 8 families, 33 genera and about 170 species. As a result of molecular phylogenetics research published in the late 2010s, several orders were folded into the Baeomycetales, resulting in a substantial increase in the number of taxa. Taxonomy The family Baeomycetaceae was originally proposed by Barthélemy Charles Joseph Dumortier in 1829 (under the spelling ''Baeomyceae''); he included two genera, ''Baeomyces'' and ''Calicium''. Baeomycetaceae was initially classified in the Lecanorales, and Baeomycetaceae and Cladoniaceae were thought to be closely related, sharing a phylogenetic origin in Lecideaceae. ''Dibaeis baeomyces'', commonly known as pink earth lichen, is a fruticose lichen belonging to the family Icmadophilaceae. Taxonomy Carl Linnaeus the Younger described the pink earth lichen in his 1782 work ''Supplementum Plantarum'' as ''Lichen baeomyces''. The genus ''Dibaeis '' was previously considered a synonym of genus ''Baeomyces'', until genetic testing established that the genera were separate and not even especially closely related. An ascocarp, or ascoma (), is the fruiting body ( sporocarp) of an ascomycete phylum fungus. It consists of very tightly interwoven hyphae and millions of embedded asci, each of which typically contains four to eight ascospores. Paula DePriest is an American lichenologist and specialist in artefact conservation. She has been curator of the lichen collection at the National Museum of Natural History, USA and Deputy Director of the Smithsonian’s Museum Conservation Institute. Early life and education Paula Teresa DePriest studied at Union University, completing her bachelor degree in 1978 and then moved to the University of Tennessee for a Masters degree in botany in 1983. She undertook doctoral research at Duke University and was awarded PhD in 1992. Career She initially worked at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, USA and was appointed the curator of the lichen collection.
