Badush Prison Massacre
On 10 June 2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) killed at least 670 Shia prisoners in an attack on Badush prison. ISIL first separated out the Sunni inmates before executing the remaining prisoners. There were 39 Indian construction workers who were executed in the region. On 13 June 2021, it was reported that Iraqi authorities had removed the remains of 123 people murdered by ISIL during the prison attack from a mass grave to identify them using DNA from relatives. The Northern Iraq offensive (June 2014) began on 4 June 2014, when the Islamic State began a major offensive from its territory in Syria into Iraq against Iraqi and Kurdish forces, following earlier clashes that had begun in December 2013 involving guerillas. The Islamic State and its allies captured several cities and surrounding territory, beginning with an attack on Samarra on 4 June, followed by the seizure of Mosul on 10 June, and Tikrit on 11 June. As Iraqi government forces fled south on 13 June, Kurdistan Regional Government forces took control of the oil hub of Kirkuk, part of the disputed territories of Northern Iraq. Badush
Badush or Badosh ( ar, بَادُوش, Bādūš) is a village in northern Iraq within the Nineveh Governorate, located northwest of Mosul. Region There are some important facilities in the surrounding area: * Badush Dam which is being built on the Tigris River, located north of the village. * Badush cement plant, located to the northeast. In 2017 the cement plant has been the site of some fighting during the Battle of Mosul, as Iraqi forces clashed with ISIL. Lt. Col. Ali Jassem of the 9th Armoured Division stated that Iraqi forces had raided and entered the Badush cement plant to where some ISIL fighters had retreated to.
