BBC National DAB
BBC National DAB is a digital audio broadcasting multiplex in the UK, for a number of radio stations which have UK wide coverage. The multiplex is owned and operated by the BBC and is transmitted from a number of transmitter sites across the country; it only carries BBC radio stations. As of the end of 2017, more than 97% of the UK's population are within reach of the multiplex following the completion of the switching on of a fourth set of new transmitters over the previous two years which had seen the reach increase from 93%. Any further expansion of DAB radio is awaiting a decision by Government on any possible digital radio switchover. BBC Radio 1Xtra is a British digital radio station owned and operated by the BBC. It broadcasts black music and urban music, including hip hop and R&B and is a sister station to Radio 1. Launching at 18:00 on 16 August 2002, it had been code named "Network X" during the consultation period. At the time, the station was listed as "1 Xtra BBC" on many electronic programming guides. The station broadcasts from the 8th floor of Broadcasting House, shared with Radio 1 and the Asian Network. According to RAJAR, the station broadcasts to a weekly audience of 724,000 with a listening share of 0.3% as of September 2022. BBC Music Jazz (a British national radio station) was a temporary pop-up Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) service which was a collaboration between BBC Radio, Jazz FM (UK), Jazz FM and London Jazz Festival, The EFG Jazz London Festival. The service ran from Thursday, 12 November 2015 until Sunday, 15 November 2015. The BBC Music Jazz event marked the broadcaster's first major collaboration with a commercial rival. BBC Music Jazz was available via Digital Audio Broadcasting, online on the BBC Music Jazz's official website, or via the BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio iPlayer app. The service was unavailable on digital television. BBC Radio 2 Country was a pop-up DAB service from the BBC which launched at 12:00 on Thursday 5 March 2015. The station covered the Country2Country Festival and was on air for the festival's duration. On its debut, the station broadcast for twelve hours each day until Sunday 8 March 2015. It was relaunched for the 2016 festival, held between 10 March 2016 and 13 March 2016, and again from 9 March 2017 to 12 March 2017. The station did not return for the 2018 or 2019 festivals. BBC Radio 2 Eurovision was a pop-up Digital Audio Broadcasting, DAB service from the BBC which launched at 12 noon on Thursday 8 May 2014. The station continued to broadcast for 12 hours each day until Sunday 11 May 2014. The station returned at noon on Thursday 21 May 2015 and continued to broadcast until 10pm on 24 May 2015. The station's programming mainly concentrated on the history and culture of the Eurovision Song Contest, as well as providing a more comprehensive coverage of the annual festival for Eurovision fans. The Daily Service
''The Daily Service'' is a short Christian service broadcast every weekday morning between 09:45 and 10:00 on BBC Radio 4's long wave and DAB frequencies. It was also broadcast on Radio 4's FM frequencies until 13 September 1991. In 1926, British novelist Kitty Cordeux began a persistent letter-writing campaign urging the BBC to broadcast daily Christian religious services on the radio. The result was ''The Daily Service,'' beginning in 1928 and continuing to the present day. Her campaign was documented in the BBC Radio 4 documentary ''The Lady Behind the Daily Service'' (2005). Originally aired from Savoy Hill and then Broadcasting House, the service was moved on the outbreak of war in 1939, first to Bristol and later to the Trinity Chapel of St Paul's Church, Bedford, under the musical direction of Dr George Thalben-Ball. Today in Parliament is a British radio programme that covers the daily proceedings of the Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament), on BBC Radio 4. When re-broadcast at around 8.30am the next day on longwave (198 LW) and medium wave, it is known as Yesterday in Parliament, similar to ''The Daily Service''. This longwave (LW) signal comes from the Droitwich Transmitting Station. It is produced by BBC News. History The programme began on 9 October 1945 at 22.45. It is the only programme that the BBC is required to make under its charter. In 1978 the public were allowed to hear MPs in parliament. In 1998 ''Yesterday in Parliament'' stopped being broadcast on FM. Content The broadcast begins with the Speaker announcing ''Order, order''. It is available daily as a podcast. ''Test Match Special'' (also known as ''TMS'') is a British sports radio programme, originally, as its name implies, dealing exclusively with Test cricket matches, but currently covering any professional cricket. It broadcasts on BBC Radio 4 LW (long wave) and local MW ( medium wave) frequencies, BBC Radio Five Sports Extra ( digital) and via the internet to the United Kingdom and (where broadcasting rights permit) the rest of the world. BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra (formerly BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra) is a national digital radio station in the United Kingdom, operated by the BBC, and specialising in extended live sports coverage. It is a sister station to BBC Radio 5 Live and shares facilities, presenters and management, and is a department of the BBC North Group division. If a news story breaks during the live sport broadcasts on 5 Live, the sports coverage will be redirected and continued on 5 Sports Extra, whilst 5 Live switches to live news.
