BBC Radio 2 50s was a short-lived pop-up DAB service from the BBC, that broadcast from 14:00 on Thursday 14 April 2016 until Sunday 17 April 2016. It played music from the 1950s, which had received much less airplay on Radio 2 since the 1990s. Imelda May
Imelda Mary Higham (born Imelda Mary Clabby, 10 July 1974), professionally known as Imelda May, is an Irish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Known primarily as a singer, she also plays the bodhrán, guitar, bass guitar and tambourine. She is known for her musical style of rockabilly revival and has also been compared to female jazz musicians such as Billie Holiday. Born and raised in The Liberties area of Dublin, May began her career in music at 16 by performing with a number of local bands and musicians. She formed her own band in 2002, and released her debut studio album, '' No Turning Back''. After the release, May relocated to London with her then-husband, guitarist Darrel Higham. BBC Music Jazz (a British national radio station) was a temporary pop-up Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) service which was a collaboration between BBC Radio, Jazz FM (UK), Jazz FM and London Jazz Festival, The EFG Jazz London Festival. The service ran from Thursday, 12 November 2015 until Sunday, 15 November 2015. The BBC Music Jazz event marked the broadcaster's first major collaboration with a commercial rival. BBC Music Jazz was available via Digital Audio Broadcasting, online on the BBC Music Jazz's official website, or via the BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio iPlayer app. The service was unavailable on digital television. BBC Radio 2 Eurovision was a pop-up Digital Audio Broadcasting, DAB service from the BBC which launched at 12 noon on Thursday 8 May 2014. The station continued to broadcast for 12 hours each day until Sunday 11 May 2014. The station returned at noon on Thursday 21 May 2015 and continued to broadcast until 10pm on 24 May 2015. The station's programming mainly concentrated on the history and culture of the Eurovision Song Contest, as well as providing a more comprehensive coverage of the annual festival for Eurovision fans. BBC Radio 2 Country
BBC Radio 2 Country was a pop-up DAB service from the BBC which launched at 12:00 on Thursday 5 March 2015. The station covered the Country2Country Festival and was on air for the festival's duration. On its debut, the station broadcast for twelve hours each day until Sunday 8 March 2015. It was relaunched for the 2016 festival, held between 10 March 2016 and 13 March 2016, and again from 9 March 2017 to 12 March 2017. The station did not return for the 2018 or 2019 festivals. Stephen Richard Wright (born 26 August 1954) is an English radio personality and disc jockey, credited for introducing the zoo format on British radio, with its zany, multi-personality approach. He presented '' Steve Wright in the Afternoon'' for 12 years on BBC Radio 1 and 23 years on BBC Radio 2, two of the BBC's national radio stations, the latter being most popular station in the United Kingdom, ending on 30 September 2022. Gary Williams (born 15 December 1970) is a British jazz singer, writer, and broadcaster whose performances include concerts, cabaret shows, and theatre. Williams has recorded ten solo albums and written ''Cabaret Secrets'', a book on stagecraft. Music career Williams started his career in social clubs before performing with the BBC Big Band on BBC Radio Humberside. Marty Wilde
Marty Wilde, (born Reginald Leonard Smith; 15 April 1939) is an English singer and songwriter. He was among the first generation of British pop stars to emulate American rock and roll, scoring several 1950s hit singles including "Endless Sleep", "Sea of Love" and " Bad Boy". During the 1960s and 1970s, Wilde continued to record and, with Ronnie Scott, co-wrote hit singles for others including the Casuals' "Jesamine" and Status Quo's "Ice in the Sun". He is the father of pop singer Kim Wilde and co-wrote many of her hit singles including "Kids in America" with his son Ricky. He continues to perform and record. Clare Teal (born 14 May 1973) is an English singer and broadcaster who has become famous not only for her singing, but also for having signed the biggest recording contract by a British jazz singer. Biography Teal was brought up in the Kildwick area of Yorkshire. She developed an interest in jazz from an early age, through her father's collection of 78rpm records, becoming "obsessed" with big band singers like Ella Fitzgerald and big bands like Joe Loss. She took music lessons, first on the electronic organ, then more formally on clarinet, before studying music at Wolverhampton University. While at university, Teal found herself without a clarinet for an unexpected examination. Mark Radcliffe (radio Broadcaster)
Mark Radcliffe (born 29 June 1958) is an English radio broadcaster, musician and writer. He is best known for his broadcasting work for the BBC, for which he has worked in various roles since the 1980s. Radcliffe began his broadcasting career in local commercial radio in Manchester before a move to the national station BBC Radio 5, where he met and formed a partnership with Marc Riley, a former guitarist with the Fall. In 1991 he moved to BBC Radio 1, closely followed by Riley with whom, under the moniker Mark and Lard, he worked for 11 years on the station.
