Azelia Liu (born March 15, 1979, in Scarborough, Ontario) is a field hockey goalkeeper from Canada. She played for the country's national junior team before joining the senior team in 2002. Field Hockey
Field hockey is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with ten outfield players and a goalkeeper. Teams must drive a round hockey ball by hitting it with a hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal. The match is won by the team that scores the most goals. Matches are played on grass, watered turf, artificial turf, synthetic field, or indoor boarded surface. The stick is made of wood, carbon fibre, fibreglass, or a combination of carbon fibre and fibreglass in different quantities. The stick has two sides; one rounded and one flat; only the flat face of the stick is allowed to progress the ball. During play, goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with any part of their body. A player's hand is considered part of the stick if holding the stick. Canada Women's National Field Hockey Team
The Canada women's national field hockey team participates in international field hockey competitions. In 1991, the Canadian men's and women's programs united under the national umbrella of Field Hockey Canada to share funding and infrastructure. The women's team made its first international appearance at the 1978 Women's Hockey World Cup in Madrid, Spain, finishing in fifth place. They were the runner-up at the 1983 Women's Hockey World Cup and the bronze medalists at the 1986 Women's Hockey World Cup. Field hockey at the 2006 Commonwealth Games took place between 16 March and 24 March for women and for men, between 17 March and 24 March. Both competitions consisted of a round robin stage of two groups of five with the winners and runners-up of each group qualifying for the semifinals. Field hockey at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro was held over a ten-day period beginning on July 15 and culminating with the medal finals on July 24 and July 25. All games were played at the Círculo Militar Deodoro. Each team was allowed to enter a maximum of sixteen athletes. The winner of each tournament qualified to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Argentina were the reigning Pan American Games champions in both the men's and women's competitions. 2009 Women's Pan American Cup
The 2009 Women's Pan American Cup was the 3rd edition of the Women's Pan American Cup, the quadrennial international women's field hockey championship of the Americas organised by the Pan American Hockey Federation. It was held between 7 and 15 February 2009 in Hamilton, Bermuda. The tournament doubled as the qualifier to the 2010 World Cup to be held in Rosario, Argentina. The winner would qualify directly while teams ranked between second and sixth would have the chance to obtain one of three berths at the World Cup Qualifiers. The top six teams also qualified for the 2013 Women's Pan American Cup. Argentina won the tournament for the third consecutive time after defeating the United States 7–6 in the final on penalty strokes after a 2–2 draw.
