Augustine Taneko
Augustine Taneko (born October 3 1954) was a member of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands, representing the Shortlands constituency. He lives in Shortlands Shortlands is a suburb of South East London, England, within the London Borough of Bromley. It has been part of Greater London since 1965, and was previously part of the historic county of Kent. After Steve Laore's death, Taneko ran for election to his former seat, finishing 2nd to Christopher Laore. Shortland Islands
The Shortland Islands is an archipelago of Western Province, Solomon Islands, at . The island group lies in the extreme north-west of the country's territory, close to the south-east edge of Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea. The largest island in the archipelago is Shortland Island (originally called Alu). With smaller offshore islands such as Gharomai (to the southwest), Balalae (to the northeast) and Magusaiai, Faisi, Pirumeri and Poporang (all to the southeast), it forms the Inner Shortlands Ward of the Western Province. The remaining islands comprise the Outer Shortlands Ward and consist of two groups; the Treasury Islands to the southwest of Shortland Island consists mainly of Mono Island and the smaller Stirling Island; the other group, which lies to the northeast of Shortland Island, consists of Fauro Island and smaller islands grouped around it - including Masamasa and Piru Islands to the east, Rohae Island to the south, Mania Island to the southwest, Asie Island to ... Western Province (Solomon Islands)
Western Province is the largest of the nine provinces of Solomon Islands. The area is renowned for its beautiful tropical islands, excellent diving and snorkelling, coral reefs and World War II wrecks, ecotourism lodges, and head-hunting shrines. The province contains many small lagoons and most of the country's tourist trade outside Honiara. History The Methodist Mission in the Western Province was established by Rev. John Francis Goldie in 1902. He dominated the mission and gained the loyalty of Solomon Islander members of his church. The relationship with the colonial administrators of the British Solomon Island Protectorate were also fraught with difficulty, at this time due to Goldie's effective control over the Western Solomon Islands. From 1927 to 1934 Dr Edward Sayers worked at the Methodist mission where he established a hospital at Gizo, and also at Munda and Vella Lavella, and carried out fieldwork in the treatment of malaria.Sayers, E. Steve Laore
Steve Eresi Laore (1963/1964 – 26 August 2010) was a Solomon Islands politician and member of parliament. Formerly a mechanic and businessman, and owner of a construction company, he defeated Augustine Taneko to become MP for the Shortlands constituency. He was a member of the Pacific Casino Hotel group that elevated Danny Philip to the position of prime minister A prime minister, premier or chief of cabinet is the head of the cabinet and the leader of the ministers in the executive branch of government, often in a parliamentary or semi-presidential system. Under those systems, a prime minister is not .... On 26 August 2010, only 22 days after he took office, he collapsed at a dinner celebrating Philip's victory and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Laore's death left Philip with a majority of one in the Parliament. He was 46 at the time of his death. He was survived by his wife, Caroline Vave Laore, and three children. Christopher Laore
Christopher Laore is a Solomon Islands politician. A physiotherapist, he worked as Director of Rehabilitation Services at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara. In August 2010, his brother Steve Laore was elected first-time Member of Parliament for the constituency of Shortlands, in the Western Province, but died suddenly just three weeks later. Christopher Laore resigned from his position in the hospital to stand as a candidate in the resulting bye-election in March 2011, which he won with 58.9% of the vote. Upon being elected, he stated: "At this time I don't have any plans and visions. My people want me to come and implement the plans and visions of my brother", which he described as improving the livelihood of the people and helping them be self-reliant. After serving as a backbencher in Prime Minister Danny Philip's parliamentary majority, in early November 2011, he joined a mass defection to the opposition, bringing down Philip's government.
