Ashfield District Council Elections
Ashfield District Council elections are held every four years. Ashfield District Council is the local authority for the non-metropolitan district of Ashfield in Nottinghamshire, England. Since the last boundary changes in 2015, 35 councillors are elected from 23 wards. Political control The first election to the council was held in 1973, initially operating as a shadow authority before coming into its powers on 1 April 1974. Non-metropolitan District
Non-metropolitan districts, or colloquially "shire districts", are a type of local government district in England. As created, they are sub-divisions of non-metropolitan counties (colloquially ''shire counties'') in a two-tier arrangement. Nottingham Evening Post
The ''Nottingham Post'' (formerly the ''Nottingham Evening Post'') is an English tabloid newspaper which serves Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and parts of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire. The ''Post'' is published Monday to Saturday each week, and was also available via online subscription until 10 March 2020. It was formerly “Campaigning Newspaper of the Year”. 2023 Ashfield District Council Election
The 2023 Ashfield District Council election took place on 4 May 2023, to elect all 35 members of Ashfield District Council in Nottinghamshire, England. This was on the same day as other local elections in England. The previous election occurred in 2019, and resulted in the Ashfield Independents winning in a landslide victory of 30 seats. The 2023 election saw the Ashfield Independents increase their majority, finishing with 32 seats. Background Labour controlled Ashfield from its creation in 1973 until 2003, when it fell into no overall control. Labour regained control in 2011 and held the council until 2019, when the Ashfield Independents won a large victory. In that election, Ashfield Independents won 30 seats with 64.6% of the vote, Labour won 2 with 18.2%, and the Conservatives won 3 with 11.2%. 2019 Ashfield District Council Election
The 2019 Ashfield District Council election took place on 2 May 2019, to elect all members of Ashfield District Council in England. The election resulted in the Ashfield Independents gaining control of the council with a large majority, winning 30 of the 35 seats up for election. The Labour Party suffered heavy losses, winning just 2 seats, a decrease of 20 compared with the last election in 2015. The 2007 Ashfield District Council election took place on 3 May 2007 to elect members of Ashfield District Council in Nottinghamshire, England. The whole council was up for election and the Labour Party lost overall control of the council to no overall control. Election result The results saw Labour lose their majority on the council, after a net loss of 8 seats saw them reduced to 9 councillors. Among the defeated Labour councillors were 2 members of the cabinet, Jessie Parker in Sutton-in-Ashfield North and Stephen Mays in Underwood. There were 12 independent councillors elected, but it was the Liberal Democrats who made big progress, gaining 8 seats to move level with Labour on 9 seats.
