Armenia Davis Cup Team
The Armenia men's national tennis team represents Armenia in Davis Cup tennis competitions and are governed by the Armenian Tennis Federation. Armenia currently competes in the fourth group of Europe zone. They reached the Group II quarterfinals in 2001. History Prior to 1991, Armenian players had been represented by the Soviet Union. The 1996 Davis Cup (also known as the 1996 Davis Cup by NEC for sponsorship purposes) was the 85th edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 124 teams entered the competition, 16 in the World Group, 26 in the Americas Zone, 29 in the Asia/Oceania Zone, and 53 in the Europe/Africa Zone. Sargis Sargsian ( hy, Սարգիս Սարգսյան, born 3 June 1973) is a former professional tennis player from Armenia. Sargsian turned pro in 1995, and has won one singles and two doubles titles during his career on the ATP Tour. He played for Armenia at the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics, in Atlanta he reached second round, but in Sydney he lost in first round. Sargsian also played at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He reached career-high rankings of World No. 38 in singles and World No. 33 in doubles during 2004. The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format. It is described by the organisers as the "World Cup of Tennis", and the winners are referred to as the World Champion team. The competition began in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States. By 2016, 135 nations entered teams into the competition. Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). The Billie Jean King Cup (or the BJK Cup) is the premier international team competition in women's tennis, launched as the Federation Cup in 1963 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The name was changed to the Fed Cup in 1995, and changed again in September 2020 in honor of former World No. 1 Billie Jean King. The Billie Jean King Cup is the world's largest annual women's international team sports competition in terms of the number of nations that compete. The current Chairperson is Katrina Adams.
