Arboretum At Penn State Behrend
The Arboretum at Penn State Behrend (725 acres) is an arboretum located on the campus of Penn State Behrend, in Erie, Pennsylvania. It is open to the public without charge. The arboretum was dedicated in 2003. It contains more than 200 species of trees and woody bushes including collections of ''Aceraceae'', ''Aquifoliaceae'', ''Arecaceae'', ''Betulaceae'', '' Caesalpiniaceae'', ''Cornaceae'', ''Cupressaceae'', ''Ebenaceae'', ''Ericaceae'', ''Euphorbiaceae'', ''Fabaceae'', ''Fagaceae'', ''Ginkgoaceae'', ''Hamamelidaceae'', ''Hippocastanaceae'', ''Juglandaceae'', ''Magnoliaceae'', ''Moraceae'', ''Nyssaceae'', ''Oleaceae'', ''Pinaceae'', ''Rosaceae'', ''Salicaceae'', ''Sciadopityaceae'', ''Taxodiaceae'', ''Theaceae'', and ''Ulmaceae''. Arboretum
An arboretum (plural: arboreta) in a general sense is a botanical collection composed exclusively of trees of a variety of species. Originally mostly created as a section in a larger garden or park for specimens of mostly non-local species, many modern arboreta are in botanical gardens as living collections of woody plants and is intended at least in part for scientific study. In Latin, an ''arboretum'' is a place planted with trees, not necessarily in this specific sense, and "arboretum" as an English word is first recorded used by John Claudius Loudon in 1833 in ''The Gardener's Magazine'', but the concept was already long-established by then. Hamamelidaceae
Hamamelidaceae, commonly referred to as the witch-hazel family, is a family of flowering plants in the order Saxifragales. The clade consists of shrubs and small trees positioned within the woody clade of the core Saxifragales. An earlier system, the Cronquist system, recognized Hamamelidaceae in the Hamamelidales order. Description The Hamamelidaceae are distinguishable from other families in the Saxifragales due to the range of floral characteristics that are generally uniform though all genera. Uniform characteristics include stipules borne on stems with leaves often 2-ranked. Genera usually have a two carpel gynoecium, although some species show variation. Other characteristics include a multicellular stigma, with shallow papillae or ridges. Ulmaceae
The Ulmaceae () are a family of flowering plants that includes the elms (genus ''Ulmus''), and the zelkovas (genus ''Zelkova''). Sciadopityaceae
''Sciadopitys verticillata'', the or Japanese umbrella-pine, is a unique conifer endemic to Japan. It is the sole member of the family Sciadopityaceae and genus ''Sciadopitys'', a living fossil with no close relatives. The oldest fossils of ''Sciadopitys'' are from the Late Cretaceous of Japan, and the genus was widespread in Laurasia during most of the Cenozoic, especially in Europe until the Pliocene. Salicaceae
The Salicaceae is the willow family of flowering plants. The traditional family (Salicaceae ''sensu stricto'') included the willows, poplar, aspen, and cottonwoods. Moraceae
The Moraceae — often called the mulberry family or fig family — are a family of flowering plants comprising about 38 genera and over 1100 species.
