Alabama State Route 62
State Route 62 (SR 62), also known as Monsanto Road, is a state highway near Guntersville in Marshall County. The highway heads east from lakeside homes and marinas along Lake Guntersville to SR 227 near Guntersville. SR 62 previously provided access to a (now abandoned) Monsanto plant, for which it was built and named. Route description History The current incarnation of SR 62 was designated in 1995. Before then, the roadway was an unsigned county route. SR 62 is a four-lane divided roadway that serves to connect lakeside homes and marinas along Lake Guntersville with U.S. Route 431 (US 431) and SR 69 and SR 79 via SR 227. At its western end was the entrance to the now abandoned Monsanto production facility, which was the reason for SR 62 being built. Guntersville (previously known as Gunter's Ferry and later Gunter's Landing) is a city and the county seat of Marshall County, Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census, the population of the city was 8,553. Guntersville is located in a HUBZone as identified by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). History Guntersville was founded by John Gunter (1765–1835), the great-grandfather of American humorist Will Rogers. Gunter's own great-great-grandfather, of Welsh-English descent, had emigrated to the New World in 1644. Gunter was the wealthy owner of a salt mine in the early 19th century. In order to obtain more land to mine, Gunter struck a deal with the Cherokee tribe that inhabited the area to use in his household as servants. As part of the deal, Gunter married the daughter (Ghe-No-He-Li, aka Katy and Cathrine) of the tribe's chief (Chief Bushyhead of the Paint Clan) and agreed to give salt to the tribe. Guntersville Lake (generally referred to locally as Lake Guntersville) is in northern Alabama between Bridgeport and Guntersville. Location The lake stretches 75 miles (121 km) from Guntersville Dam to Nickajack Dam. It is Alabama's largest lake at 69,100 acres (279.6 km2). State Route 227 (SR 227) is a route that serves as a connection between the Etowah–DeKalb county line south of Crossville with U.S. Route 431 (US 431) at Guntersville in Marshall County. Route description The southern terminus of SR 227 is located at the Etowah–DeKalb county line to the southwest of Hendrixville. From Hendrixville, the route travels in a northwesterly direction en route to Crossville. From Crossville, it travels in a northerly direction to Geraldine where it again resumes its northwesterly track. State Route 69 (SR 69) is a state highway that extends from the southwestern to the northeastern parts of the U.S. state of Alabama. The southern terminus of the highway is at an intersection with SR 177 at Jackson. The northern terminus of the highway is at an intersection with US 431/ SR 79 at Guntersville. State Route 79 (SR 79) is a state highway that extends northeastward from Birmingham to the Tennessee state line. Prior to the completion of Interstate 65 (I-65), SR 79 was the southern part of the route that connected Birmingham and Huntsville. The southern terminus of SR 79 is at an interchange of Tallapoosa Street with I-20/I-59 (exit 128) near Birmingham–Shuttlesworth International Airport. Ohatchee, Alabama
Ohatchee (inc. 1956) is a town in Calhoun County, Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 1,157. It is included in the Anniston–Oxford, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Andrew Jackson used the area around present-day Ohatchee to prepare for the Battle of Talladega. It was at this battle that Jackson found an Indian boy next to the body of his mother. Jackson adopted the child, naming him Lyncoya Jackson. Lyncoya died of tuberculosis in 1828 at the age of sixteen. The site of the battle is marked with a large stone marker along Alabama Highway 144 between Alexandria and Ohatchee, near Tallaseehatchee Creek. Between 1863 and 1864, Alfred A. Janney built a furnace, now named Janney Furnace, to produce pig iron for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War.
