Alexandria is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Calhoun County, Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 4,032. It is included in the Anniston–Oxford, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Alexandria is located near the center of Calhoun County at (33.766072, -85.884389). It is bordered to the south by the Saks CDP. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Alexandria CDP has a total area of , of which , or 0.11%, is water. Demographics Alexandria Village/CDP Alexandria first appeared as an incorporated town on the 1880 U.S. Census, though no date of incorporation was mentioned and it did not appear again as a town after that census. It would not appear separately on the census again until it was made a census-designated place (CDP) in 2000. The precinct was also named Alexandria and first appeared on the 1870 U.S. Census. The community of Saks is served by the City of Anniston police and fire coverage. It is included in the Anniston-Oxford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Saks is located southwest of the center of Calhoun County at 33°42'29.527" North, 85°50'39.574" West (33.708202, -85.844326). It is bordered by the city of Anniston to the southeast, by Alexandria to the north, and by West End-Cobb Town to the south. John Pelham (officer)
John Pelham (September 7, 1838 – March 17, 1863) was a soldier who served with the Confederate cavalry under J.E.B. Stuart during the American Civil War. He was called "The Gallant Pelham" by Robert E. Lee for his use of light artillery at Fredericksburg to significantly delay Union soldiers during the Civil War. Early life Pelham was the third of seven children, with five brothers and a sister Betty, born to Dr. Atkinson and Martha Pelham ( née McGehee ) at his grandparents' home along Cane Creek near Alexandria, Alabama. Davy Crockett
David Crockett (August 17, 1786 – March 6, 1836) was an American folk hero, frontiersman, soldier, and politician. He is often referred to in popular culture as the "King of the Wild Frontier". He represented Tennessee in the U.S. House of Representatives and served in the Texas Revolution. Crockett grew up in East Tennessee, where he gained a reputation for hunting and storytelling. He was made a colonel in the militia of Lawrence County, Tennessee and was elected to the Tennessee state legislature in 1821. John Coffee
John R. Coffee (June 2, 1772 – July 7, 1833) was an American planter of Irish descent, and state militia brigadier general in Tennessee. He commanded troops under General Andrew Jackson during the Creek Wars (1813–14) and during the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. During Jackson's presidency (1829-1833), he appointed Coffee as his representative, along with Secretary of War John Eaton, to negotiate treaties with Southeast American Indian tribes to accomplish removal to the west of the Mississippi River and extinguish their land claims. This policy was authorized by Congressional passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Coffee negotiated the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek of 1830 with the Choctaw, by which they ceded their lands. The Battle of Tallushatchee was a battle fought during the War of 1812 and Creek War on November 3, 1813, in Alabama between Native American Red Stick Creeks and United States dragoons. A cavalry force commanded by Brigadier General John Coffee was able to defeat the Creek warriors. Background After the massacre at Fort Mims, General Andrew Jackson assembled an army of 2,500 Tennessee militia. Jackson began marching into Mississippi Territory to combat the Red Stick Creeks.
