Adorf
Adorf () is a small town and municipality in the Vogtlandkreis to the south-west of the Free State of Saxony, Germany. Gettengrün, a village within the municipality, borders on the Czech Republic. Etymology The name Adorf can be analysed as "water-village", the "A" coming from old German word for water (''"Ahha"''), and "dorf" meaning a village. History Adorf was founded around 1200. In 1293 it gained the status of a "town". The town walls were commenced in 1477. Industries developed because of its favorable position and transport links: crafts, spinning, weaving, embroidery working with mother-of-pearl and musical instrument making. The Johanniskirche was constructed in 1498. The town was destroyed by fire in 1768. The Freiberger Tor, the last remaining town gate in Vogtland, was rebuilt between 1768 and 1773 with a wooden framed upper storey. Adorf (Vogtl) Station
Adorf (Vogtl) station is the station of Adorf in the German state of Saxony. It is a railway junction with only local significance. Only the Plauen–Cheb railway is still operated by scheduled trains, the railway towards Chemnitz has not yet been closed, but only serves diverted trains. It no longer has scheduled passenger services. The railway towards Aš and the Siebenbrunn–Erlbach railway, trains on which used to pass through to Adorf, are now both closed. Plauen–Cheb Line
The Plauen–Cheb Line is a mainline railway in Saxony, Germany and the Czech Republic, which was originally built and operated by the Kgl. Sächsischen Staatseisenbahnen (''Royal Saxon State Railways''). It runs from Plauen im Vogtland through Weischlitz, Adorf und Bad Brambach over the national border to Cheb. History Planning and construction The origins of the present mainline between Plauen–Cheb stem from the Vogtländischen Staatseisenbahn from Herlasgrün through Falkenstein/Vogtl. and Oelsnitz to Eger, which opened in November 1865. A direct track from Plauen to Bohemia was planned, and in October 1871 work started on the tracks from Plauen to Oelsnitz. To overcome the height difference between the Saxon-Bavarian Railway and the floor of the White Elster valley a considerable amount of earth had to be moved. The Vogtlandkreis () is a ''Landkreis'' (rural district) in the southwest of Saxony, Germany, at the borders to Thuringia, Bavaria, and the Czech Republic. Neighboring districts are (from south clockwise) Hof, Saale-Orla, Greiz, Zwickau and Erzgebirgskreis. Plauen is the administrative center and largest city of the district. Plauen (Vogtland) Oberer Bahnhof ''(Upper station)'' is the main station of Plauen in the German state of Saxony on the Leipzig–Hof line. It is the main hub of rail traffic in Vogtland.
