Abraham Hart
Abraham Hart (December 15, 1810 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania– July 22, 1885 in Long Branch, New Jersey) was a United States publisher, a member of the noted firm of Carey & Hart. Biography He was of Dutch parentage. As a boy, he was taken into the employ of the publishing firm of Carey, Lea & Carey. In 1829 the firm divided its business, and a partnership was formed between Hart and Edward L. Carey, the junior member of the old firm. This house of Carey & Hart became the best known publishing house in the United States. It was the first to collect the fugitive essays of Macaulay, Jeffrey, Mackintosh, Carlyle, and others and publish them in separate volumes. Carey died in 1845, and Hart continued the publishing business until 1854, when he retired. After retiring from the publishing business, he involved himself with industrial enterprises, serving in an executive capacity at the Centennial Button-hole Machine Company and the American Button-hole Machine Company. Carey & Hart was an American publishing company founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1829 by Edward L. Carey and Abraham Hart. History In early November 1829, Edward Carey withdrew his partnership from his Henry Charles Carey, brother's company, Carey, Lea, & Carey, to form Carey & Hart alongside Abraham Hart. The duo took over the retail book business of Edward's former company and remained in the same building alongside Carey, Lea, & Carey, now renamed Henry Charles Carey, Carey & Isaac Lea, Lea. The companies were located on the southeast corner of Fourth and Chestnut Streets. The company remained successful for twenty-five years, although Carey and Hart's partnership saw its end following Edward Carey's death on June 16, 1845. Mikveh Israel is a Spanish and Portuguese synagogue that follows the rite of the Amsterdam esnoga. It is the oldest synagogue in Philadelphia, and the longest running in the United States. Mikveh Israel Cemetery (11th And Federal)
The Mikveh Israel Cemetery is a Jewish cemetery known as the Federal Street Burial Ground and located at 11th and Federal Streets in the Passyunk Square neighborhood of South Philadelphia. It was first called Beth Hahayim ( he, בית החיים). It is one of three cemeteries belonging to Congregation Mikveh Israel, Philadelphia's oldest synagogue.
