Assendelft
Assendelft () is a town in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. It is a part of the municipality of Zaanstad. Assendelft was a separate municipality until 1974, when the municipality of Zaanstad was formed. However, Assendelft didn't want to be part of Zaanstad and pled together with Krommenie to be part of a new municipality called Assendelft-Krommenie. Zaanstad is part of the Amsterdam Agglomeration ( GA). The North Sea Canal connects Assendelft with Amsterdam and Velsen, and it lies about 13 km northeast of Haarlem and about 15 km south of Alkmaar. History Assendelft is one of the oldest settlements in North Holland, with signs of settlement dating from as early as 500BC. The earliest written form of the name appears as 'Ascmannedilf' in 1063. Krommenie-Assendelft Railway Station
Krommenie-Assendelft is a railway station in Krommenie and Assendelft, Netherlands. The station lies on the Den Helder–Amsterdam railway, and was opened on 1 November 1869. The station had a goods yard, but no longer does. The station had remained unchanged since 1975 until 2006. The station began being moved in 2006, further west, closer to the Saendelft estate. This new station opened on 14 December 2008. Krommenie
Krommenie () is a town in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Zaanstad, and lies about 15 km northeast of Haarlem. History Krommenie developed in the 11th century as a peat excavation settlement. In 1702, it severely damaged by fire. During the 19th century, Krommenie started to industrialise. The Dutch Reformed church is a single aisled church from the 15th century. It was severely damaged in 1574 by fire and extensively modified and restored between 1657 and 1658. The Old Catholic Church was built in 1602 as a clandestine church in a farm. It was enlarged in 1633 and modified in 1826. Krommenie was a separate municipality until 1974, when the new municipality of Zaanstad was created. North Sea Canal
The North Sea Canal ( nl, Noordzeekanaal) is a Dutch ship canal from Amsterdam to the North Sea at IJmuiden, constructed between 1865 and 1876 to enable seafaring vessels to reach the port of Amsterdam. This man-made channel terminates at Amsterdam in the closed-off IJ Bay, which in turn connects to the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. The drainage of the canal to the North Sea is done through the Spui Locks at IJmuiden, augmented by the largest pumping station in Europe. This system is vital to the groundwater management of the Western Netherlands. Velsen () is a municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It is located on both sides of the North Sea Canal. On the north side of the North Sea Canal there is a major steel plant, Tata Steel IJmuiden, formerly known as ''Koninklijke Hoogovens'' (the town of IJmuiden is actually located south of the canal).
