Asian Junior Chess Championship
The Asian Junior Chess Championship is an annual chess tournament open to players in Asia and Oceania ( FIDE Zones 3.1 to 3.7) who are under 20 years of age. The tournament has been held annually since 1977 with occasional interruptions. Since 1985, a separate Asian championship for girls has also been organized. Since at least 1996, the two championships have always been held concurrently. Competition The championships are organized by national federations affiliated with the Asian Chess Federation. They are open to chess players who are under 20 years of age as of 1 January of the year in which the championship is held. The championships are organized as a round-robin or a Swiss-system tournament depending on the number of participants. Since 2006, the open championship has been a nine-round Swiss. Coimbatore, also spelt as Koyamputhur (), sometimes shortened as Kovai (), is one of the major metropolitan cities in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Ruben Gunawan
Ruben Muljadi Gunawan (17 April 1968 – 27 August 2005) was an Indonesian chess Grandmaster (1999). Born in Jakarta, his earlier achievement was winning the Indonesian U16 championship in 1982 in Bandung. This victory qualified him to play in the Asian Junior Chess Championship 1983, which took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Ruben Gunawan won the championship and was awarded the FIDE Master title. In 1984 he won the Indonesian U19 championship. Gunawan played for Indonesia in the Chess Olympiads of 2000 in Istanbul, and 2004 in Calvià. He died at the age of 38 in Manado because of heart failure and pneumonia that he had during the Calvià Olympiad. He achieved the 1009th rank at FIDE position in July 2005. Ricardo de Guzman (born September 12, 1961) is a Filipino chess player. He was one of the premiere players of the Philippines in the 1980s and was awarded the title of International Master in 1982. He is nationally ranked 39th in the Philippines, 22nd among active players. He reached a peak rating of 2439 but currently has a classical ELO rating of 2344, rapid rating of 2261 (peak rating was 2376 in January 2019) and blitz rating of 2363 (peak rating was 2405 in July 2014December 2018) per FIDE. Domingo Antonio Ramos (born March 29, 1958) is a former professional baseball player who was an infielder in Major League Baseball from 1978 to 1990. In 1982 with the Seattle Mariners, he filled in at all four infield positions. Ramos hit over .200 just twice, .283 in 1983 and .311 in 1987, in 103 at-bats. Wong Meng Kong (born 18 September 1963) is a chess player from Singapore. He won the Singaporean Chess Championship in 1986, 1989, 1990 and 1991. He represented Singapore at the Chess Olympiad eleven times (1982, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006). Wong won the 1979 Asian Junior Chess Championship in Sivakasi.
