Asau (Samoa)
Asau is a village situated on the north west coast of Savai'i island in Samoa. It is the capital village of the Vaisigano political district and serves as the main business centre at the west end of the island. Vaisigano
Vaisigano is a Districts of Samoa, political district at the western tip of Savai'i island in Samoa. The capital of the district is Asau (Samoa), Asau. This area is also referred to as 'Itu Asau' (Asau district) in the Samoan language. The population of Vaisigano is 6,543 (2016 Census). Within the district is the village of Vaisala (Samoa), Vaisala whose chief Va'ai Kolone became the Prime Minister of Samoa twice in the 1980s. Kolone also founded the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP), the dominant party in Samoan politics which is currently in power. There is a conservation area with a turtle habitat at the village of Auala and a rainforest reserve in Falealupo at the westernmost tip of the island. Köppen Climate Classification
The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936. Later, the climatologist Rudolf Geiger (1894–1981) introduced some changes to the classification system, which is thus sometimes called the Köppen–Geiger climate classification system. The Köppen climate classification divides climates into five main climate groups, with each group being divided based on seasonal precipitation and temperature patterns. An area of tropical monsoon climate (occasionally known as a sub-equatorial, tropical wet climate or a tropical monsoon and trade-wind littoral climate) is a tropical climate sub-type that corresponds to the Köppen climate classification category ''Am''. Mauga Afi
Mauga Afi ("Burning Mountain" or "Mountain of Fire") is a volcanic mountain in the Gagaʻifomauga district on the island of Savai'i in Samoa. It has an elevation of 1847m. Asau Airport
Asau Airport is a small domestic airfield located in the thick dense jungle at the northwest end of Savai'i in Samoa. The airport is in the village of Asau and mainly services chartered flights. The original airport was constructed in 1969. It was washed away by Cyclone Ofa in 1990, and the current airport was built to replace it in 1999. After being closed for six years the airport reopened in April 2021. Facilities There is only one rigid and roughly surfaced runway. There are no runway lights, and there is no watch tower. Asau Airport, however, is under the main Sky Watch Tower at Faleolo International Airport on Upolu. Only Twin Otter and Britten-Norman Islander planes can land and take off this small airport, generally because the runway and tarmac cannot handle any other larger and heavier aircraft. PotlatchDeltic Corporation (originally Potlatch Corp) is an American diversified forest products company based in Spokane, Washington. It manufactures and sells lumber, panels and particleboard and receives revenue from other assets such as mineral rights and the leasing of land as well as the sale of land considered expendable. In February 2018, Potlatch acquired Deltic Timber Corp., a smaller Arkansas-based timber company. Following the merger, the company was renamed PotlatchDeltic Corporation. Leilua Lino
Leilua Lino is a Samoan human rights activist, who works to raise awareness of gender-based violence and violence against children in Samoa, through her own personal experience. She was a finalist in 2018 for the International Children's Peace Prize. In 2019, she was the first recipient of a Commonwealth Innovation for Sustainable Development Award (Peace). Biography Lino comes from Asau in Savaii. At the age of nine years old, Lino was raped by her father, who she took to court seven years later, leading to his imprisonment in 2018 for twenty-nine years. In order to support her after the rape, from 2011 she attended Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG), a non-governmental organisation that offers help and advocacy to survivors. They supported Lino to file her police report against her father. She came into contact with SVSG through her church.
