Arun Gas Field
The Arun gas field is a natural gas field located in the Aceh province on north Sumatra, Indonesia. It was discovered by Mobil Oil Corporation in 1971 and has been described as the "the most lucrative LNG operation in the twentieth century." The field began production of natural gas and condensates in 1975. Production of natural gas at the Arun field contributed to a serious environmental conflict in which the secessionist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) fought for control of the Aceh province and associated gas revenues. During the conflict, the Indonesian military committed hundreds of human rights abuses against Acehnese villagers. The field closed due to lack of feed gas in 2014, and was converted into an LNG import terminal in 2015. West Papua (province)
West Papua ( id, Papua Barat), formerly Irian Jaya Barat (West Irian), is a province of Indonesia. It covers the two western peninsulas of the island of New Guinea, the eastern half of the Bird's Head Peninsula (or Doberai Peninsula) and the Bomberai Peninsula, along with nearby smaller islands. Extractivism is the process of extracting natural resources from the Earth to sell on the world market. It exists in an economy that depends primarily on the extraction or removal of natural resources that are considered valuable for exportation worldwide. Some examples of resources that are obtained through extraction include gold, diamonds, lumber and oil. This economic model has become popular in many Latin American countries but is becoming increasingly prominent in other regions as well. Many factors are involved in the process of extractivism. Berkeley Mafia
The Berkeley Mafia was the term given to a group of American-educated economists in Indonesia who were given technocratic positions under the Suharto dictatorship during the late 1960s. They were appointed in the early stages of the New Order administration. Their work focused on promoting free-market capitalism in Indonesia and reversing many of the progressive economic reforms that had been introduced by the Sukarno government. The Berkeley Mafia, like the Suharto dictatorship itself, aligned with the United States during the Cold War. The group included Widjojo Nitisastro, Mohammad Sadli, Emil Salim, J. B. The Indonesian mass killings of 1965–66, also known as the Indonesian genocide, Indonesian Communist Purge, or Indonesian politicide ( id, Pembunuhan Massal Indonesia & Pembersihan G.30.S/PKI), were large-scale killings and civil unrest primarily targeting members of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI).
