Aruanda (film)
''Aruanda'' is a 1960 Brazilian documentary short film by Linduarte Noronha, about the remnants from a former quilombo in the backlands of ParaÃba State. In the 2010s it was voted number 95 on the Abraccine Top 100 Brazilian films list and also number 10 in the documentary list. Plot The film shows the daily miserable life of the inhabitants descendants of slavery from a former quilombo located in a semi-arid region of ParaÃba State. Using some elements of fiction, the documentary approaches the local reality in an unusual way in the Brazilian cinema until then. Production The project was inspired by a report by Linduarte Noronha, a Pernambucano State born journalist based in ParaÃba. He assembled a small film crew, composed of Vladimir Carvalho, João Ramiro Mello and Rucker Vieira. Short Film
A short film is any motion picture that is short enough in running time not to be considered a feature film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits". In the United States, short films were generally termed short subjects from the 1920s into the 1970s when confined to two 35 mm reels or less, and featurettes for a film of three or four reels. "Short" was an abbreviation for either term. The increasingly rare industry term "short subject" carries more of an assumption that the film is shown as part of a presentation along with a feature film. Quilombo
A ''quilombo'' (; from the Kimbundu word , ) is a Brazilian hinterland settlement founded by people of African origin, and others sometimes called Carabali. Most of the inhabitants of quilombos, called quilombolas, were maroons, a term for escaped slaves. Documentation about refugee slave communities typically uses the term mocambo for settlements, which is an Ambundu word meaning "war camp". A mocambo is typically much smaller than a quilombo. The term quilombo was not used until the 1670s, and then primarily in the more southerly parts of Brazil. In the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America, such villages or camps were called . Sertão
The ''sertão'' (, plural ''sertões'') is the "hinterland" or "backcountry". In Brazil, it refers both to one of the four sub-regions of the Northeast Region of Brazil (similar to the specific association of "outback" with Australia in English) or the hinterlands of the country in general. Northeast Brazil is largely covered in a scrubby upland forest called a '' caatingas.'' Its borders are not precise. ParaÃba ( Tupi: ''pa'ra a'Ãba''; ) is a state of Brazil. It is located in the Brazilian Northeast, and it is bordered by Rio Grande do Norte to the north, Ceará to the west, Pernambuco to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Abraccine Top 100 Brazilian Films
In 2015, the (Abraccine) published a list with the 100 best Brazilian films ever according to the votes of its members. This poll was the basis for a book named ''The 100 Best Brazilian Films'', published in 2016. The idea of the ranking and the book was suggested by publisher Letramento, with whom Abraccine and television network Canal Brasil co-released the book. The ranking was done based on individual lists done by Abraccine's 100 critics, who initially mentioned 379 films. The full list was first made available to the public on 26 November 2015, and the book was released on 1 September 2016. The list covers almost all decades between the 1930s and the 2010s, the only exception being the 1940s. A 1931 film, Mário Peixoto's ''Limite'', is the oldest one and also the first ranked, while the most recent work is from 2015, Anna Muylaert's ''The Second Mother (2015 film), The Second Mother''. Humberto Duarte Mauro (30 April 1897 – 5 November 1983) was a Brazilian film director. His best known work is '' Ganga Bruta''. He is often considered the greatest director of early Brazilian cinema. Career Mauro's second feature film ''Thesouro Perdido'' (Lost Treasure) won the Brazilian "Film of the Year" award in 1927. Later that year, Phebo Sul America Film was reorganized into Phebo Brasil Film. The first film released under the new Phebo was ''Braza Dormida'' (Sleeping Ember). ''Braza Dormida'' was a boxoffice success and furthered Mauro's career as one of Brazil's leading directors.
