Arthur Sherwin
Arthur West Sherwin (22 July 1879 — 10 October 1947) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire during the 1908 season. Sherwin was born in Derby, the son of Samuel Sherwin, a chemist, and his wife Margaret. He made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1908 season in May against Sussex when he scored 7. He played regularly to the end of the season. Sherwin was a right-handed batsman and played 21 innings in 11 first-class matches with an average of 8 and a top score of 24. Sherwin died in Duffield, Derbyshire at the age of 68. Derby ( ) is a city and unitary authority area in Derbyshire, England. It lies on the banks of the River Derwent in the south of Derbyshire, which is in the East Midlands Region. Duffield, Derbyshire
Duffield is a village in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire, north of Derby. It is centred on the western bank of the River Derwent at the mouth of the River Ecclesbourne. It is within the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Area and the southern foothills of the Pennines. History Early history There have been humans in the area, probably, from the Iron Age. A palaeolithic hand axe has been discovered near the head of the River Ecclesbourne at Hopton. In the Duffield area itself, settlement by the Celts occurred in 400BCE. Although it has been suggested that, once farming began, they would have inhabited the plains of the Derwent and Ecclesbourne, they would most likely have retreated to higher ground during the winter floods. Charles Bakewell Sherwin (9 August 1877 – 8 June 1950) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1907. Sherwin was born in Derby, the son of Samuel Sherwin, a chemist, and his wife Margaret. He played for Derbyshire in the 1907 season in one match against Warwickshire in August . Derbyshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Derbyshire. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1908 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for thirty-seven years. It was their fourteenth season in the County Championship and they won five matches to finish fourteenth in the Championship table. 1908 season Derbyshire played twenty games in the County Championship and one match against the touring Gentlemen of Philadelphia. The captain for the year was Reginald Rickman. Ernest Needham was top scorer and Arnold Warren took most wickets. The most significant additions to the Derbyshire squad in the season was Leonard Oliver who played regularly for Derbyshire until 1924. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1907 represents the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for thirty six years. It was their thirteenth season in the County Championship and they finished bottom of the table having won two matches in the season. 1907 season Derbyshire played 22 games in the County Championship, one match against the touring South Africans and one against MCC. They lost all but three of the played matches, which were two wins and a draw, and ended at the bottom of the Championship table. Levi Wright was in his second season as captain and was also top scorer. Samuel Cadman took most wickets with 63.
