Highway 173 (AR 173, Ark. 173, and Hwy. 173) is a north–south state highway in Southeast Arkansas. The route begins at the Overflow National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and runs north to U.S. Route 165 in Wilmot. The route is maintained by the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT). Route description Highway 173 begins at Overflow NWR in southeastern Ashley County just over north of the Louisiana state line in a region known as the Lower Arkansas Delta. The area is known for flat, agricultural land with swamps, bayous and small towns dotting the landscape. Overflow National Wildlife Refuge
Overflow National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is a 13,973 acre (56.55 km2) national wildlife refuge in Ashley County, Arkansas. Overflow NWR is one of three refuges forming an administrative complex, which also includes Felsenthal NWR and Pond Creek NWR to the west. Habitat and Wildlife Overflow National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) was established in 1980 to protect one of the last remaining bottomland hardwood forests in the Mississippi Alluvial Plains. These forests are considered vital for wintering migratory waterfowl populations in the Mississippi Flyway. The refuge is composed of nearly 14,000 acres of bottomland hardwood forests, shrub wetlands, moist-soil units, and upland pine-hardwood forests. Wilmot is a city in Ashley County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 550 at the 2010 census. Ashley County is a rural South Arkansas county with a culture, economy, and history based on timber and agriculture. Created as Arkansas's 52nd county on November 30, 1848, Ashley County has seven incorporated municipalities, including Hamburg, the county seat and Crossett, the most populous city. The Arkansas Delta is one of the six natural regions of the state of Arkansas. Willard B. Highway 52 (AR 52, Ark. 52, and Hwy. 52) is a designation for three state highways in Southeast Arkansas. All segments are low volume, two-lane roadways in rural areas. The segment between Wilmot and Indian has been designated since the original 1926 Arkansas state highway numbering, with new designations created in 1966 and 1985. All segments are maintained by the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT). Route description ArDOT maintains all three segments of AR 52 as part of the state highway system.
