Arismendi is a Basque surname, formed from ''aritz'' (oak) + ''mendi'' (mountain), and thus meaning "mountain of oaks". The Basque people are indigenous to the area of northeast Spain and southwest France, a historical region known as the Basque Country. History A branch of the family immigrated to Latin America. One of the first to do so was probably Juan Bernardo de Arismendi, who was from Fuenterrabía, Spain. He immigrated to present-day Venezuela, and was commander of the fortress in Araya during the second half of the 17th century. Helena Arizmendi
Helena Arizmendi (1924 or 1927–2015), sometimes featured as Elena Arizmendi, was an Argentinian operatic soprano. A student of Maria Barrientos, she made her début in 1945 in Buenos Aires at the Teatro Colón where in 1948 she partnered Beniamino Gigli as Mimi in ''La Bohème''. She was highly acclaimed for her performances in Italy which included La Scala. In 1989 she received the Konex Award. Biography Although she claimed to have been born in 1927, other sources note that she was born 15 April 1924 in Avellaneda. As a child, Helena Arizmendi began singing popular songs with her mother while living in La Plata where her father was employed. Carlos Raúl Villanueva Astoul (May 30, 1900 – August 16, 1975) was a Venezuelan modernist architect. Villanueva went for the first time to Venezuela when he was 28 years old. He was involved in the development and modernization of Caracas, Maracay and other cities across the country. Among his works are El Silencio Redevelopment which included 7797 apartments and 207 shop premises and the Ciudad Universitaria, the main campus of the Central University of Venezuela. Tibaldo Rodney Arismendi Carrasco (21 March 1913, in Río Branco, Uruguay – 27 December 1989, in Montevideo) was a Uruguayan politician and political writer. Biography In 1930, he joined the Communist Party of Uruguay (PCU), which he represented at the Parliament between 1947 and 1973. From 1955, he was secretary-general of the PCU; in 1971 the party became a constituent of the Frente Amplio. María Luisa Cáceres Díaz de Arismendi (September 25, 1799 – June 2, 1866) was a heroine of the Venezuelan War of Independence. The beginning of the war Luisa was born in Caracas, Venezuela, to José Domingo Cáceres and Carmen Díaz, prosperous Criollos. On her father's side, she was of Canarian descent.
