Aricuri
''Syagrus coronata'', commonly known as the ouricury palm, aricuri palm, or licuri palm, is a species of palm tree that is native to eastern Brazil, ranging from the southern part of the state of Pernambuco, into the state of Bahia, south to the Jequitinhonha River in the state of Minas Gerais. The tree can live for 30-150 years, though most only live for 8-10 years on average. It plays an important role in the diets of tropical seasonally dry forest animals. Description ''Syagrus coronata'' reaches tall with a crown of semi-plumose leaves. The blooms are bright yellow, and the plants bear fruit for most of the year. Ecological importance Licuri palm nuts are the main food source of Lear's macaw, making up around 95% of their diet. These nuts can grow to be one inch (2.5 cm) in width. Threats The destruction of small seedlings by cattle poses a threat to the plants, primarily through the destruction of concentrated groves. Those groves are vital to Lear's macaw. Uses '' ...

Endemic Flora Of Brazil
Endemism is the state of a species being found in a single defined geographic location, such as an island, state, nation, country or other defined zone; organisms that are indigenous to a place are not endemic to it if they are also found elsewhere. For example, the Cape sugarbird is found exclusively in southwestern South Africa and is therefore said to be ''endemic'' to that particular part of the world. An endemic species can be also be referred to as an ''endemism'' or in scientific literature as an ''endemite''. For example '' Cytisus aeolicus'' is an endemite of the Italian flora. '' Adzharia renschi'' was once believed to be an endemite of the Caucasus, but it was later discovered to be a non-indigenous species from South America belonging to a different genus. The extreme opposite of an endemic species is one with a cosmopolitan distribution, having a global or widespread range. A rare alternative term for a species that is endemic is "precinctive", which applies to s ...

Syagrus (plant)
''Syagrus'' is a genus of Arecaceae (palms), native to South America, with one species endemic to the Lesser Antilles. The genus is closely related to the '' Cocos'', or coconut genus, and many ''Syagrus'' species produce edible seeds similar to the coconut. Description Palms in this genus usually have solitary stems; clustered stems are less common, and a few are stolon-like subterranean. The stems are normally spineless, but some species have spiny leaf sheaths or spines. Those species that have upright trunks grow tall with stems that are in diameter. The leaves of all but one species, '' S. smithii'', are pinnately compound. Leaf sheaths are split along their entire length, and consequently, crownshafts are not present in this genus. The transition from the leaf sheath to the petiole can be gradual and difficult to identify, but in species where they can be distinguished, leaf sheaths are long and the petioles are . The inflorescences are unbranched or branch once; ...

Ouricury Wax
Ouricury wax is a brown-colored wax obtained from the leaves of a Brazilian feather palm '' Syagrus coronata'' by scraping the leaf surface. Harvesting Harvesting ouricury wax is more difficult than harvesting carnauba wax, as ouricury wax does not flake off the surface of the leaves. Properties and uses The physical properties of ouricury wax resemble carnauba wax, so it can be used as a substitute where light color is not required, e.g. in carbon paper Carbon paper (originally carbonic paper) consists of sheets of paper which create one or more copies simultaneously with the creation of an original document when inscribed by a typewriter or ballpoint pen. History In 1801, Pellegrino Turri, ... inks, molding lubricants and polishes. Its melting point is 81-84 °C. Waxes {{Material-stub ...

Lear's Macaw
Lear's macaw (''Anodorhynchus leari''), also known as the indigo macaw, is a large all-blue Brazilian parrot, a member of a large group of neotropical parrots known as macaws. It was first described by Charles Lucien Bonaparte in 1856. Lear's macaw is long and weighs around . It is coloured almost completely blue, with a yellow patch of skin at the base of the heavy, black bill. Although there are records of the macaw from Britain from the early 1830s, this bird was only generally recognised as an independent species in the late 1970s. It is rare with a highly restricted native range, which was only discovered in 1978, although intensive conservation efforts have increased the world population about thirtyfold in the first two decades of the 21st century. It inhabits a dry desert-like shrubby environment known as ''caatinga'', and roosts and nests in cavities in sandstone cliffs. It mostly feeds on the nuts of the palm species '' Syagrus coronata'', as well as raiding maize from ...
